I didn't get the point of this vehicle before I realized it could only seat 4, now I am even more cunfused. What's next, a 2-seater, all-wheel drive, top heavy X4 SAV that weighs 4,800 lbs and has no storage room? LeMansX5, if you have a spy shot of that I will fall off of my chair.

It makes as much sense as a Merc CLS, and arguably more sense than a 3 or 6 series Coupe. There's no reason why one person's choice of car should make complete sense to another person, but at least we have a choice for those people who like the X5's go anywhere nature but within a more dynamic and stylish package.

Why an X6?
Quote:
Steved,I'm with you all the way on this one.Let me share the reason that the X6 will be my next vehicle.First let be clear,I would be all over the X6 regardless of the fact I live where it's built and have many friends and neighbors who work at the plant. The BMW Design Team had my name and picture as example #1 when they thought through this new concept.I am in the commercial real estate land development business and travel approx 20k-25k miles per yr.My most recent cars include a,Cadillac SRX( a big mistake),Infiniti G35x,Audi A4 Avant(quattro),and now an X3.All the cars were good at a few things, but not everything (a compromise) like everything in life.As many miles as I travel,my car becomes my default office on the road.I have several unique needs in a car.1.) I travel w/ some clients and business associates, once every two months, maybe a little more if I have a lot of projects going. So,I need a fair amount of luggage area, mine and anybody traveling w/ me.I also need to carry plats, maps, aerials and files on projects ( our business is still paper intensive).I need a decent size boot (trunk for the yanks ).I also need some ("elbow room") in the interior. My trips are multiday and many miles. When I travel w/ people there is nothing worst than feeling like you are sitting on top of each other ( a problem in both the A4 and G35).We fold open maps, look at files, etc in the car.I need a little interior room.I rarely have the need to carry more than 4 people in the car ( including family). If it's more than 4 people we simply take two cars (both business and family). The 4 seats in the X6 is no problem for me.2.) I do occasionally have the need to offroad and drive out onto real estate sites to inspect.Trust me,I'm not talking about rockcrawling!!!! I do need a reasonable amount of ground clearance in a vehicle. This option was non existent in the A4 or G35.Much better w/ the X3.I also can tell you I replaced the underside plastic engine guard in the A4 twice, due to hitting truck tire carcasses on the interstate traveling 75MPH at night.Nice to have a little ground clearence.I at one time thought I wanted a Range Rover Sport.Reconsidered, don't need no stinking 6k Flying Brick!!!!! 3.) Lastly, and first and foremost, I am a forever high performance car enthusiastLast edited by palbay; 03-14-2008 at 12:13 PM. |

I now hold you responsible for my broken tailbone. It does sound like this car will suit palbay to a T. To each his own. This world would probably be a much more boring place if car companies only manufactured the cars that I particularly like. I am glad that some people are so excited about this car. I really would hate to see BMW fail with a new model. I hope BMW is successful with these cars because it allows them to make the cars I desire. I just hope they don't fall victim to jumping into wierd segments to compete with other brands like M Benz and so on. I think it sort of dilutes the brand. Maybe I am a little behind the times as this goes, but I am just not sure how mch I particularly like BMW offering 5 or 6 X models. BMW has 6 car lines (1, 3, 5, 6, 7, and Z) and soon they will have 5 X models (X1, X3, X4, X5, X6) and maybe even a larger X7. It just seems wrong to me for BMW to focus so much attention on SAV style vehicles.

LeMansX5: Thanks for the info; I'll be calling my local Dealer soon!
FSETH: I just want to add to what "palbay" said and explain why I am interested and why others like me might be interested in the X6: 1) Married, no kids, no pets. 2) X6 = Size with performance: I am 6'6" and my options are limited to SAV's (CUV's) or LPS's. - The SAV's that I would be interested in are the X5 (both the current 4.8 and 3.0 are not what I want, If the X635i does not impress in person, I plan to wait for the X5 diesel). The FX (I drive one and the new design is somewhat the same plus questionable vents). -The LPS: we have two 5 series and one Infiniti M on our street i.e. too ubiquitous. Mercedes is not my thing! Though I have to say that two seats in the back bothers a little! |
