I think BMW could afford to take more risks in designing the X6, and the reason they could do that was they had room for failure; they had the safety net: the X5. X5 was already immensely popular, so if reception of X6 turned out to be lukewarm, BMW at least wouldn't lose market for it, 'cause it never really existed.

Plus, the technology on X6 was going to eventually make way to X5 and it was based on the E70 anyway, so BMW could take some risks and challenge themselves.

That's what I think anyway... Becuase to me, X6 doesn't really make sense either. They gave up visibility, cargo capacity, and passenger room for the coupe-like aesthetics...

Of the two, I'd take the Aztek. At least at the end of the day, I won't feel disappointed that I spent $60k on something that would shatter the rearview mirror of cars in front of me.

For that kind of money, I could get one of these:

(But of course, it would break down the next day and depreciate faster than the US stock market falls)

They would not have jacked up prices by $3000 on X6 within 6 months of its release if it was failure or lukewarm. Special financing and leasing offers on X5 but none on X6. They are selling so fast that dealers can't keep the X6.

^ yeah, I know X6 is popular and sells very well. I never said it doesn't sell well. I was just explaining my theory as to why the BMW was able to be so bold and daring with the design of the X6 and take such risks with its fan-base.

I said that even "IF reception of X6 turned out to be lukewarm", BMW wouldn't have lost much, because it's not a whole new design as it's based on the X5, and the new technology on X6 was eventually going to make way to the X5 anyway, and they wouldn't lose any market for coupe-like-SUVs, because such market never existed and the popular X5 already has its place in the SUV market. That's maybe why BMW was so adventurous and bold in designing the X6, to appeal to a particular group of people who couldn't be convinced with X5; A particular group that thinks a controversial design, less cargo, visibility and seat, but still costing more makes sense!

Maybe you read it wrong??

Do you think he designed the X6 to look similar to the Aztec?

What would be the advantage of that strategy?
