How can I check to see if I already have the Assist module? I have Assist in my 05 4.8is, but don't know if it eliminates my ability to add the SES module. It

Easiest way is to hold down the Voice button on the left side of your steering wheel for 1 full second. If you hear a beep and your instrument cluster says VOICE RECOGNITION or you can say "HELP" and the car responds - then you already have voice recognition in your Assist module.

If you don't use the Assist feature, you could always inplug the module and then us the SES Module if your wire harness has the plug.

Ok, I pressed the voice button and didn't get any voice options, so I guess that means I don't have the Assist voice module. If I add your SES module, do I lose any other Assist functions or other functions? Do I just lose Assist voice function, but not Assist itself?

BMW Assist is separate from the SES Module.
Please note that this information is found on
the main page Of X5world under NAVIGATION
The title is Voice Recognition Module Owners Manual.
http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/BM...%20Control.pdf

If you wish you will also find additional information
that includes the complete install guide.

Finally found offical BMW documentation on when Voice Recognition bacame part of the Assist Module.

See SIB 84 13 04
"For E46 and E83 vehicles up to 3/05 production and E85 and E53 vehicles up to 4/05 production, voice activation functions are not part of the TCU. A separate SES module can be installed. Referto the EPC."

So yes, you can use my SES module w/ your Assist module as long as you meet the above production date requirments. There will be no loss of Assist functionality.
