***SOLD*** CarPC kit with CIS-IBUS for i-Bus BMWs

***S O L D ***

I have listed on ebay a complete set up for a CarPC for an i-Bus bimmers, including the CIS-IBUS module.

The kit includes everything needed to install CarPC in a car factory equipped with navigation and/or TV module along with factory monitor. Includes a mini-PC...

I tried the set-up in my 4.6, but the car had some other issues, and once i got rid of the car, I never reinstalled the kit in the next car...

The kit is about $1000 from the manufacturer, I listed it at $500 start and $650 buy it now... shipping in the lower US included...

Here is the link

Term, your my hero. I'd buy this in a heart beat, but I'm over budget. What a cool setup. This might be a loaded question, but what would you be capable of doing with this once installed? I get the general idea, just curious as to what specifically.

Hey Dragon... Thanks for the kind words... The way I look into this - some men express mid-life crisis through buying a Corvette... some start drinking... some play with more and more women... (well, i kind of like this one, but it is more expensive than a stable of 'Vettes)... I play with electronics in my car...

Since I have relisted the item, here is an updated link - Carpc CIS Ibus for BMW Complete Set Includes All Pieces Needed for Carputer | eBay

The CarPC is a computer. It is called a mini computer because it is housed in a small case, that is supposed to fit in more restricted spaces inside a car. A CarPC can be installed into any car, and just like any other PC, it needs mode of input - keyboard, mouse, and a mode of output - monitor...
Then, you can do everything that you normally do with a PC - you can type a letter or email to a friend, you can do your taxes, or play games, you can listen to your tunes or watch a video... since the CarPC is sitting in the car, most folks don't do their taxes in the car, and rather have their MP3 library and movie library on the hard disk or USB media, they install car specific software (in our case, the GT1, INPA, NCSExpert come to mind), or car generic software (bluetooth OBD reader).

This particular setup comes with CIS-IBUS - this is a device that converts the computer's VGA output into the video feed for the OE monitor and also interprets the turns of the monitor knobs into computer commands, that allows you to select entries on the screen. So, this unit acts as an interface for the mode of output (monitor) and one of the modes of input (knob on the monitor for selections). You still can connect keyboard and a mouse - as a matter of fact, once I find the 3DNavigator mouse that I bought for the CarPC, I will put it out for the auction too...

Since the CIS-IBUS is connected to the iBus, it can monitor the iBus traffic (for your testing/development purposes), can send the commands into the iBus - say, you have written a script that does something to the car, like blinking the lights, or rolling the window, or whatever - once the CarPC executes the script, the car performs what you tell it to... I have never gotten that far in my set up but one of the ideas for the scripts was, once a phone call comes through BT, the car would roll all the windows up and turn on the AC to cut out the road noise for the conversation... the other one was, when the car is parked, to have the outside mirrors fold - this function can be achieved by using a dedicated "eLights" microcontroller, but a full blown computer can make this task easier...

This CarPC is running on Linux for the OS and CarMedia for the front - the CarMedia in appearance resembles the regualr menu of the navigation screen. I did not change anything from the factory, but since this is a computer, you can install whatever you want to install...

here are couple of videos - they are NOT mine but they show the CarPC with CIS-IBUS in action:
