Anything that you move along the surface of the vehicle has the potential to scratch the paint...its impossible to wipe a 1 square foot area at a time and then wash your applicator. One dirt has absorbed into the applicator (sponge, mit, cloth, what ever) it has the potential to sratch a painted surface. If detailers followed those steps it would take a week to detail a single car. I detailed cars for 5 years and had no problems using my methods and never scratched any pain in the process. There is no perfect way to wash or detail an automobile...there are some bad ways however.

If you want to make sure that you will never scratch your paint my suggestion is don't wash your car, don't uncover your car and better yet don't drive your car. ;)

I've been using the Mr Clean Autodry system for 2 years now on both my X5 and Honda Odyssey. These are 2 big vehicles that take a while to wash and dry. It works great and saves me around 1/2 hour in drying time as it does dry completely spot free. The soap cleans well, sheets the water and leaves the wax on the car.

My only gripe is that the soap and filter refills are somewhat expensive...but they work as advertised.
