Bluetooth TCU Replacement - 6/2004 built X5 did not need dealer coding

I just replaced the TCU in my 2004 X5 (06/2004 built) with another TCU with part# 84 11 6 946 993 (1st generation with 12/12/2004 build date) and bluetooth started working right away. I did not have to visit the dealer for any kind of coding. I do remember reading somewhere that lot of the late model 2004s were shipped with everything coded, they just did not have the bluetooth in the TCU functional.

I learned a lot about my new (for me) 2004 X5 reading these forums. Thanks for all the folks who added all the information on this site.

I guess that the replacement TCU was previously programmed, as in used. Most probably the previous car VIN is still set in the Assist portion...

You should be able to check easily enough. On your phone/handset the BMW bluetooth device will be know as

BMWXXXXX where XXXXX is the last 5 digits of yours (or someone elses VIN number !)

Hi All

I also have this TCU unit : part# 84 11 6 946 993 (1st generation with 12/12/2004 build date). And I can't pair it with my mobilephone. I have seen a lot of different decriptions on how to pair, but nothing seems to work. Do I need at pairing button or should it work without.
My IKE display says Activate phone if I hit the R/T botton on the steringwheel. So please somone how do I pair with this TCU unit?

Thanks

No you do not need to press anything to pair. Pairing mode on the TCU is active for 2 minutes after the turning the key to position 2.

From your description it sounds like the vehicle needs to be re-coded to enable phone and bluetooth functions.

Hi

Thanks, but that procedure does not work in my car. But I found that pin 46 in the 54 pin socket i used for pairing. So if you do the same procedure for pairing as for the ULF module meaning.
1. ignition off
2. connect pin 46 to ground or hold the pairing button down
3. ignition on and wait 2 secs.
4. remove pin 46 from ground or release botton

Then I can paire with my mobile ;-).......
But the unit now tels me "Insert Card". Is that the cardreader in the tcu module??

regards
