Bluetooth Retrofit into 2004 X5

Alright guys, I'm contemplating doing a Bluetooth retrofit in my 2004. Here's my question: I have BMW Assist, is there a way to do the Bluetooth retrofit without sacrificing the BMW Assist?

Only if your X5 was produced after 03/2004

In that case your only option is to install the Visteon BT module, and you will have to forego Assist. See http://www.xoutpost.com/articles.php?...ticle&artid=23 for info on how to do this.

For 2004's produced after 03/2004 you have the choice of either retrofitting the Visteon BT module (as referenced above), or you can swap out your current Motorola BT/Assist module (on which the BT function is disabled) with a 2005 Motorola BT/Assist module that supports both.

I am going to do this retrofit in the coming months. I have an 04 X5 - produced in June of 04. Can you please keep this thread informed of how it went and also where you got the bluetooth module from?

Thanks
Ted

Smile BT retrofit into post 3/04 '04 X5

I dropped off my 8/04 build '04 to SF BMW today to have the new combo assist/bluetooth /TCU installed and the car re-coded. Will report back to the board on how it goes. It's the "brand new" combo unit ending in -056 ($615 from Crevier, OUCH!). I'm also having the snap in / eject box installed along with another bumper cell antenna. Wish me luck!

Installation Successful, but Questions...

So my local dealer succeeded in putting the "newest" BT/Assist TCU (-056) into my 8/04 X5. One comment and two questions:
1) My dealer could NOT get the eject box / snap in adapter / extra antenna to work. Spent 1.5 hours (OUCH!) and didn't get anywhere. Any thoughts?
2) I believe that people with the -993 TCU had voice control of their phones? How does you activate / use it?
3) When I push R/T, I get the phonebook in my MID - but every name is followed with a "?". Is that normal? Or is it supposed to indicate the type of number (cell, home, etc.).

(?) is normal in directory. What BT phone do you have?
On your steering wheel, the left lower area, there is button for "answering" and "ending" calls...well, if you hold the button for 3-5 seconds, you will activate voice recognition. State "Help" and they will tell you what commands are available. You can dial number directly. However, it has it's own separate phone directory that you can store numbers associated with names in there (doesn't use the phone book from your phone).

Also, the first BT/Assist module -993 did NOT have voice recognition for the phone....only the -114 and -056 has voice recognition for the phone only (no nav commands).
