E39 ULF Bluetooth not entering pair mode...a nav sw issue?

I'm having trouble getting my e39 to enter pairing mode so I can pair my new phone with the system. When I put the ignition in first position (or second, tried both) and hold down the armrest pairing button, the pairing lights on the nav screen do not light up and I am left unable to initiate the pairing procedure.

I have other phones paired with the vehicle and they all work fine, only thing I've done since pairing them is update the nav software from v16 to v22. Would this have any effect on the car's ability to pair new phones? I' have the mk3 nav computer, the car is MY01.

I have tried disconnecting the battery for 15 mins for a hard reset without luck, and am starting to think the nav sw upgrade has something to do with my issues. Your input? Thanks in advance!
