E39 ULF Bluetooth not entering pair mode...a nav sw issue?

I'm having trouble getting my e39 to enter pairing mode so I can pair my new phone with the system. When I put the ignition in first position (or second, tried both) and hold down the armrest pairing button, the pairing lights on the nav screen do not light up and I am left unable to initiate the pairing procedure.

I have other phones paired with the vehicle and they all work fine, only thing I've done since pairing them is update the nav software from v16 to v22. Would this have any effect on the car's ability to pair new phones? I' have the mk3 nav computer, the car is MY01.

I have tried disconnecting the battery for 15 mins for a hard reset without luck, and am starting to think the nav sw upgrade has something to do with my issues. Your input? Thanks in advance!

Are you able to get into the pairing procedure after all? If yes, do other random phones pair with the ULF? Did you disable the extra fancy BT features on the trouble phone, like sync contacts?

You may not be doing the procedure to initiate pairing mode correctly. You push and hold the arm rest button for a few seconds before you turn the car on. Then you turn on the car while you continue to hold the button down. Here is a quick post that explains it a little more.

Thanks for the input.

I'm unable to get the car to enter pairing mode at all. I've tried, retried and rechecked the pairing procedure and still nothing.

It was working fine when I first installed the ULF; pairing mode worked great with no issues. I updated the mk3's software with v22 from v16 via threads and download links (no dealer involved), and upon getting a new phone recently I'm unable to enter pairing mode to pair new phones.

It works as it should with my previously paired phones (paired before the v22 update), so I'm thinking the electronics had a miscommunication between the mk3 and the ULF, making it disable the pairing option. Would a bluetooth reset work? Anybody know how to do that?

If you are 200% positive that you tried the pairing procedure the right way (I myself find the procedure totally retarded, being used to the E60 and later procedure):

1 Try forcing the ULF to go in pairing mode with navcoder or similar software.
or
2 Unplug the big black connector on the ULF module and the maroon&blue connectors of your MK3 unit (since you suspect the MK3 is acting up), for a couple of minutes and then plug them back in.

By "I'm unable to get the car to enter pairing mode at all" you mean that you don't even get the "Bluetooth Pairing" message? Or you get the message but the phone and the ULF don't sync?

I will try disconnecting and reconnecting the connectors and get back with the results. If not I'll have to go the navcoder route.

When i go through the pairing procedure (yes, it's quite retarded i agree) the car has no response. No pairing message on the nav screen, no lights lit above the telephone button. If the system would enter pair mode I am positive the phone would pair..just trying to get the pairing mode to initiate

Got it. So the phone actually has no fault, since the X doesn't even get into pairing and no pairing message comes up. I guess you could try the disconnect method first, then a couple of more pairing attempts. Just to make sure you didn't forget the exact procedure since you last paired your phones, I am attaching the ULF manual. Take a look at the procedure, maybe, just maybe, you are missing something.
