The easiest solution is to replace entire TCU (to the another corresponding the attached matrix ) with the production date more than at least 09/2004.

Any advice on where to purchase? I am certainly ok with used.

Also, once I get the new tcu is it plug and play or will I need to pay the dealer for coding.

eBay is a great source for a used TCU. Just pay attention to the part number to be sure it is one that has BT and is compatible with an I-Bus car.

I recommend that you use NavCoder to code it. This is way faster and more reliable than taking it to the dealer.

I got a replacement TCU for mine from one of the sponsors of this board, EAS. Plug & play, cheaper than dealer, and much more trustworthy than eBay.

Bought mine replacement at local used parts sale. Bought another one at eBay. I don't think to much worry about buying there. Just pay attention to the labels and numbers on the TCU.
TCU is designed to be extremely safe and reliable, because assyst is a part that responsible for health and life of the driver, it should work even in case of serious crash. Almost nothing to broke there, no mechanics inside, solid electronics and bold alluminium box as body.

Before I go and make a huge rookie mistake...

Will this fit in my 2004 X5?
