Steering wheel controls w/aftermarket headunit,PAC SWIX

Having some problems getting the steering wheel controls to work w/an aftermarket head unit. It's a Kenwood and the SWIX only works sometimes, they say it doesn't work at all with the 5 series. Anyone running something that does work? I saw the thread about the Pioneer avic and it works flawlessly, but that's a specific PAC for the Sony/Pioneer brand units...
