Dension UK Suck

My Ice link has been playing up again and will not charge the i pod and keeps losing the song info and turning the radio on. So I thought I would ring up the importer from which I purchased the unit from to get it swapped over. He said it must be the way you fitted it you must have a loose wire I then went on to explain that I had the trunk lead from the states. Then I get "Why are you calling me then" I replied are Dension not all the same company? We have nothing to do with the States, So if you want my help fit the leads you got supplied with the kit. This is when I should have driven down there and rammed the Ice link down his throat. I think i might speak to the credit card company and try and get my money back.

Rant over!

LOL...Not funny really, and I know exactly how you feel..in a way..This is the ONLY reason I havent had one fitted yet, and Im going crazy not having "my" music in the car...All the iceLink fitters over here that Ive spoken to, will ONLY fit it in front of the vents! Is this normal, and do I have to order one from the states to NOT have it fitted there?

Anyway, I dont get the UK-US difference thing. My X5 is less than a year old, but BMW here wont do F*** ALL for me under warranty, because its a US Model?......yes, rant over...

Hope everything turns out well and keep us informed!

Angry

It's just cost me nearly £400 to have a repair done that appears to be a fault with the Ice>Link wiring - bad pin in the loom on the green wire that provides signal for the left rear speakers.

Installer says it's nothing to do with them as it was a faulty cable and therefore the importer is liable, complete silence from the UK importers and me with a large bill from BMW as the kit is not covered by BMW or their warranty. At least they did fix it though.

Dension have never once responded to requests for assistance with technical difficulties and the UK importer near Heathrow just ignores phone calls and emails. He did change the adapter once, but it made no difference and since then he has not been interested at all.

I wish you luck, but don't hold out any hope of assistance from them. There have been a number of people in Europe reporting problems with the BMW software in the Ice>Link system but so far no one is taking any notice. It may be different in the US.

Wow. So you recommend not "ice>Linking" at all? Or just get everything done here, and not import one? Im glad BMW did fix it however. And for what its worth, the 400 quid doesnt surprise me. I found out in February that my X and I will be in the UK for another year. Unforunately, I now have to get my X "compliant" with UK law, which ONLY means I have to put a rear fog light in it, and have the beams shifted to the "left".

So what was the quote I just got from BMW about 10 minutes ago? 532 quid PLUS VAT!!! WTF?!?! I could get it done for 30 quid, but some that will mean some t*at putting a hole in my dash for a fog light button, which Im not feeling right now...

Anyway, let me know what you recommend I do about this ice>Link solution, becuase thats what I bought this iPod for, but now Im a bit weary....

Can I ask, when you say they wont do anything for you cos its a US model, that doesnt make sense because BMW has a 2 year worldwide warranty.
They have to fix any warranty issues, !!!!! dont they.
I am asking because I am exporting my US X to the uk in the summer when I return home and it will be still well under 2 years old when it arrives.I have spoken to the service manager at my local Dealer in the Midalnds and he was very helpfull and not at all concerned that he will be looking after my US X in the future if it needs any work done.

Hello again,
Not to worry you,but if you have to comply with the SVA test your headlight will need to be 'fixed' to stop the amber corners being on with the side angel eyes as well.I am preparing my car for this test later this summer.
I have done the fog light install myself, if you have the trailer hitch fitted it is a cheap fix. There is an article about this project on the forum.
Good luck.

To be honest Bozzo It is a good product and with Toms help I think it will be ok! and if you can get over the shipping costs which i think you can then will be good.As one of the post above says the UK version of the ice link is a real pain to fit the US version is a 10 min job hence why I went down this route,The reason I bought the ice link from the UK, if there was a problem with it I thought it would be a lot easier to exchange looks like I was wrong on this! I will continue using the ice link for as long as I can,but if one of the new changers comes up which plays MP3 I will get one of those. I am in the lucky postion that one of my friends is a BMW tech so if the same happened to me as in the post above would be fixed for free or under warranty! It is amazing what you can get if you know the right person!

Sorry Avonside, I was specifically realting to the "maintenance" side of the warranty. I That is the only thing they wont honor here. I will find out for the first time about regular warranty issues this weekend, because my 12V outlets dont work.

Also, I could get the cheaper SVA done, but since I dont have one of the "UK" consoles, (the one with the fog light switch in it) I will have to pay the difference. What ticks me off though, is they put these poxy white stickers on my headlights, which I confirmed in a reputable garage doesnt do a bloody thing to the direction of light, and when I take the stickers off, (immediately) the lights are not turned at ALL...They did this on BOTH my e46's and Im sure it will be the same for this one...But only with the oil changes, etc, they wont honor...

Thanks that is good to hear, Yes it is a real bummer to loose the maintenance package, especially that I bought a new X5 last August and have 4 years full service and maintenance BUT because I am bringing the car home to the UK I will loose the whole lot, I wont even get the first service free because I still have 2 greens left on the dash at present and we dont do that many miles. The only consolation is that I saved about 17,000 pounds over the same spec UK car so I cant realy complain too much !!!!!!!.
I have 2 UK xenons units waiting in my parents garage that I have collected over the last year, so I will have the nice euro clears when the SVA is done.
BTW that UK light switch unit in only 60 pounds if you were interested, I had a mate of mine send me one over from home when I did the rear fog retro fit.
