A quick troubleshooting question about Sirius integration (2003 X5 with nav)

Hello everyone--

I just went through the process of installing the factory OEM Sirius upgrade to my MY 2003 X5 with factory navigation which to my eyes was identical to this installation (http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/s...avigation.html.

At the end of the installation I went to initialize the sirius system and while my head unit sees and recognizes the CD changer it does not see the sirius box. The install was very straightforward so I don't think that anything is wrong there; is there some sort of change I need to initiate with the head unit or some sort of switch that needs to be thrown on the CD changer?

Thanks in advance for your help and Happy 4th of July.

Paul

Paul,

You are probably not in US mode, try this to see if this gets you up and running:

1. Turn on your car
2. If the radio is on, turn it off
3. Turn the radio on
4. Immediately push and hold the SELECT button until the radio serial number shows (5 to 10 seconds)
5. Use the < > keys to cycle through the menu

To set your radio to USA mode, set the < > keys to cycle through the menu until you see the AREA mode. The radio will likely be set to NOAREA. Use the 1 or 2 buttons to switch to different areas, set it to US.

If this doesn't do the trick, I will need to know your production date and whether you have CD or DVD-based Navigation.

Hi Tom--

Thanks for the help and Happy Fourth! I went through the steps and found that my radio was already in USA mode and subsequently it didn't remedy my problem.

I believe that my nav system is a DVD based nav based upon the DVD stamping on the changer itself; what else could be wrong short of a bad Sirius receiver? The jumper cabling and installation instructions were all pretty straightforward so I am doubting I messed that up. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your help, I really really appreciate it.

Check the 2 amp fuse on the Sirius itself - just to make sure. Also, what is the production date on the X5? This can be found on the door sticker on the driver's side.

The fuse I checked; that was the first thing I did after figuring out that it wasn't seeing the Sirius! It also seems that if that fuse is missing the CD changer doesn't respond either.

The production date on my doorjamb is 02/03... is my radio too early to accept the connection?

The other thing I have noticed is that my Sirius receiver looks slightly different than the one pictured; on the one pictured below there seems to be two antenna inputs whereas mine has only one.

Here is the one in the tutorial for reference:

The newer receivers only have one input - nothing to worry about. There's a good possibility your NAV OS is is too old according to your build date.

Check to see your software version on the NAV computer following the procedures listed in this link:

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all-...ystem-faq.html

You should be at v23 or higher for Sirius compatibility. If not, download the newest OS version and update!

Cool I appreciate it Tom. I am trying to figure out how to use Alcohol 120% but once I have that licked I will update the thread.

Thanks again!

About a month ago, I took my 1/03 X5 to 3 different places (2 high end car audio places and the BMW dealership), and, even with the expert help of Micah at Bavarian Audio Works, they were never able to get Sirius to work with the Nav. I even replaced the radio with the current model and BMW upgraded the Nav OS to v27. The BMW guy said there's an extra wire to my Nav unit that's not there on the 5/03 car he brought in to compare it against. Unfortunately, I'm not sure you can get Sirius to work with the Nav unit on these early '03 X5s without some very sophisticated electronic sleuthing to determine how the wires are configured. I gave up and am now in the process of replacing the whole thing with an AVIC Z1.

Paul, can you remove the radio module and tell us what the part number is?
