I can't imagine it's iTunes; but anything is possible. In case it does matter, it's an '02 X5 with MK III Navi with version 3-1/63.

Ah, there is your problem! It's a MK III. The Audio text option uses a screen format that is only supported by software version V24 and above, and that is not available on a MK III.

In order to display Audio Text you need :

New CD Changer, Sept 2005 or later.
New Radio module BM53 or BM54, Sept 2005 or later.
Mk IV Nav computer running V24 or later.

Strange, as it displays the Audiotext option for me when I hit Info and I can select or deselect it. Also, why wouldn't the Select button work in MP3 mode? Does that menu list have to do with the formatting as well? I saw in the NAV FAQ that V24 brought - E85: Displaying of MP3 info text.

To see what happening you need to know quite a lot about the way that the various modules (Radio, Nav Computer, CDC and display) interact with each other.

To display the AudioText screen the CDC sends messages containing the text to the radio, the radio sends messages to the Nav Computer and the Nav computer renders the display on the monitor.

It's pretty obvious that BMW never envisaged a new BM53/54 and CDC being installed with a MK III computer, very short sighted of them.

Also, the design of the messaging system is very poor, the BM53/54 has no way of knowing if there is a MK III or MK IV computer attached.

So with the Mk III, the BM53/54 sees the messages from the CDC that contain the ID3 info, so enables the AudioText option. The Mk III understands the messages to display the AudioText option, as that uses one of the older screen display types. The messages sent to display the AudioText are sent to, and received by, your MK III computer, it just does not understand them. The BM53/54 says "go to the AudioText type screen and display these three lines of text", the MK III gets the messages and ignores them as it does not know what the AudioText screen is.

I don't know why the Select button does not work, maybe the previous commands to switch to the new (unsupported) screen have confused the Nav Computer?

are you guys using Alpine CHA-S634 CD Changer

to play mp3s?
if so, will it work in my 06 4.4 with NAV and DSP and will I be able to see ID3 tags? I have a regular non MP3 compatible cd changer now but would LOVE mp3 playback.

thanks!

Alex

This thread is about the standard BMW CDC made after September 2005 playing back MP3's.

If you want to use an Alpine CHA-S634 then the best solution is to use an Intravee http://www.intravention.co.uk

The Mk III Nav computer does not support ID3 display from the BMW Changer. The Nav computer requires V24 or higher software, which is not supported by the Mk III.
