Aftermarket Speaker Mounting???

For those of you that have replaced/ upgraded the factory speakers, how did you go about mounting a 5.25" speaker in the door with the factory cutout being 6"?? Also, did you worry about recreating the "channel" that the factory speaker had from the door to the door panel??

i used the factory hardware/mounting hardware.
the BSW Stage 1 kit worked out just fine. the
directions that were included were quite clear
about how everything was to be mounted.

i had 5.25 on there but the sound was not clear. what i did was changed to 6.5 mb quarts pce216.

first i removed the factory speaker. then with a heat gun i removed the factory speaker from the factory speaker pod. now, the 6.5 does not have a perfect fit. i used a dremel to shave around the plastic rim on the mb quart to have a tight fit with the factory pod.
try to protect the speakers voice coil, so no plastic junk lands in side. i worked with a plastic bag, and worked small areas at a time..... next
i used cloth tape inside the pod where the speaker sits. i did a few layers not a lot, also before you use the tape drill your screw holes... the tape gave the speaker and the pod a more tighter grip when screwed...

nextel - thanks for the info. After looking at the setup I was wondering if I should go up to a 6.5". Unfortunately I have had these speakers sitting in the basement for awhile waiting to have time to install them and I think it is past the return period.

some 6.5 will fit perfectly others will be too large

MB Quarts , Dynoaudio, and Focal are all 165mm in diameter and will need a fair amount of trimming if you want to retain the original baffle. Other speakers that are advertised as 6.5 inch are actually 6 inch (160 - 155mm) and these fit usually without modification. Examples of 6.5" that will drop right into the baffle without mod include alpine, pioneer, polk, infinity (may need to trim the tabs) focal also make a 160 speaker that fits. If you don't want to keep the original speakers you can cut the wires, bash the old speakers out of the baffle with a hammer, run a bead of hot glue around the lip in the baffle and drop the new speakers in, solder the connections and your done!

Cool - I am glad to hear I can reuse the baffle - looking at it I could not tell if the factory speaker would come out of it or not. That is interesting about the other speakers being a little smaller - I really wanted to go with Alpine components, but they did not have a 5.25 component system. Hopefully I still have time to return the ones I purchased and I might go with the Alpines. I had these in a previous vehicle and they sounded great!!

Mild hijacking of the thread here but does anyone know the max mounting depth for a set of mid bass drivers in the X5?

I currenty have Dynaudio MW 160 in all four doors, diameter is approximately 7 in and mounting depth of these speakers is 67 mm. You can also make a mounting plate with 0.75in MDF board like what AUS did here and it should give you some more room in the back. Hope this helps.

Crap - wish I had asked around before buying these speakers. I had been on Crutchfield and their recommendation was 5.25, so that is what I bought (from somewhere else) - MBQ Discus. I would really rather go with a larger diameter if it fits better, but I guess I will just have to do some fabrication.

Now if my window motor will just come in before week's end, I can knock all of this out this weekend!!
