Little lost, how do I install my Alpine CDA 7894?

I have Nav and DSP, it comes with a 4.8is, which is nice

Anyway, I have read the stereo articles many times, and I'm still not quite sure on how to accomplish the install. Either some articles skip some steps or aren't exactly related with what I'm trying to do.

I think this one is the closest. http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/x5/s...-x5-4-6-a.html

The unit came from my old E36 M3 which used a harness adapter from Crutchfield.

Well I'd have to ask, why do you want to?

To install the Alpine CDA-7894 you will have to take out the OEM Nav system and DSP that you already have.

Ok I guess I should have been more specific. I want to add the unit because it sounds way better than the stock one (both radio and cd's) and it plays mp3's as well. I can also change cd's in the front.

I would like to keep the stock unit to play tapes up front and use the computer as well as the nav of course. Please tell me it's possible!

It's not possible - well not realistically possible.

So I cannot plug my unit into the Aux in via an adapter and find power somewhere in the LCD, it doesn't work like that? How did the write-up above make it happen then?

The CDA 7894 is a full blown DIN sized head unit, the 'keg' in that post is designed to use an Aux input with a small controler unit.

What are my best options to play MP3's and improve sound quality? If I have to change CD's in the trunk then so be it.
I also would like to leverage the existing system as much as possible (i.e. not make any changes to speakers, amp, etc.).

Best way to improve sound quality, replace speakers and amp!

Best way to play MP3's depends, easiest would be fit a new OEM CD Changer, from September 2005 on they play MP3's, otherwise fit some sort of iPod interface.

That's very sad, I know the E36 M3 sound system is different but simply switching the head unit using the existing HK speakers and amp made a world of difference! I'm bummed
