Aftermarket Stereo / NAV

I have not been able to find much information on here about completely replacing the factory stereo (specifically regarding a 2005 X3). Preferably, I would like to replace the entire sound system, including the speakers. I do not have the X3 yet, so I am unable to do much recon on my own.

The first challenge is the head unit. For one thing, I've read that at least in some models, the factory head unit is used to control the onboard computer. Can anybody confirm whether this is true on the X3? Additionally, the form factor for the radio slot is not a standard DIN. Are there any mounts and faceplates available on the market to allow for installation of a 1DIN unit where the BMW radio used to go, or do you have to find custom solutions?

Finally, how many amplifiers come with the non-premium radio and where are they located?

PS. If anybody has any pictures of the center console after they replaced the head unit, I'd love to see them.
