Replace 2001 X5 in dash tape deck with CD player?

Is there any option to replace the factory in dash tape deck with a CD player? I have a 2001 X5 with DSP sound and the widescreen MKIII navigation. There is a tape deck behind the nav screen and I'd rather have a cd player there. Is there any way to do this?

The X5, 7-series and 5-series never had a CD option behind the NAV screen, only the 3-series. However, the 3-series montior is physically smaller than the other models and will not fit.

It would be best to go with an iPod/DICE setup to allow your entire music library to travel with you with more features than any CD player/changer can ever offer.

I am also looking to do this.

Are you saying that there is NO single CD player that can be fitted behind the nav screen in place of the useless cassette? I thought some X5s did have a CD player there, depending on other options.

No X5 was ever offered with a CD player behind the NAV screen, even in 2006. The e46 screens are physically smaller and will not fit.

So it is IMPOSSIBLE to fit a CD player behind the nav screen in an X5?

I thought I had seen this combination in the past. What is it that prevents the installation?

The NAV screen in the e46 (only CD capable screen) is physically smaller than the opening - it simply will not work.

But I'm not too concerned (well, at all really:-) about the e46. I would like to be able to fit a CD player behind the nav screen in my e53 X5. When looking for a car I'm sure I saw this combo. I remembered it as the dealer was surprised, saying he'd never seen it before.

IIRC it's a DIN sized hole back there, what happens if a Business CD player is pushed into it?

The hole is not DIN sized, an installation kit will be needed for DIN-sized radios:

5-series/X5 Aftermarket Radio Installation Kit

With enough money and time, anything is possible. The real question is whether it is worth it.
