Remove original audio & now diagnostic tool cannot be used
I've removed the original audio (Business CD) and replaced with a Kenwood flip-out, rear camera, bluetooth and nav. All good except today when I took it to the dealer as I wanted to change the settings e.g door lock to auto and a couple of other adjustments. The service fault finder picked up that there were changes to the system, obviously, radio, camera etc. In short they were unable to use the diagnostic fault finder and will not be able to use this tool in the future on the car due to the changes. Any suggestions? I'm thinking unplug the new head unit and plug the old unit back in but what would be the cause of this? |

Let's see if i have this straight. You have a 2007 X3 (still under warranty i presume) and you removed the original audio (Business CD) and replaced it with a Kenwood flip-out, rear camera, bluetooth and nav.. Correct???
That means you replaced the Manufactures gear and installed after market gear correct? Now you expect the dealer to use BMW diagnostic gear to diagnose your X. Is that correct?

Correct.
For people familiar with the system, what would be the cause of the error? Would my assumption be correct? And yes, I expect the dealer to be able to use their equipment to diagnose the fault. If there is a fault not related to the audio then they should be able to fix it - regardless of whether I removed the original audio or not. |

Then why would the dealer say "They were unable to use the diagnostic fault finder and would not be able to use this tool in the future on the car due to the changes."

Some new vehicles have components that are in a service loop. Meaning, the main computer is connected to a tranny computer, tranny connected to the main radio, main radio connected to airbag system and so on.
By taking out the HU (main radio) you broke the chain of information getting back to the diagnostic port and the reader will not work. Its a simple fix if the stereo installers didnt hack your wire harness. Pull the kenwood out and plug in your factory OEM HU. Then take the X to get the diagnostic done. When your done pop in the kenwood. |

Thanks Canadian, that confirms my understanding of the way the system is designed.
I'll report back once I take it back to the dealer to confirm. |

The radio's presence on the I-Bus should have no bearing at all on the general diagnostics functions on the car. It is on an entirely separate bus. And, that bus (the I-Bus) is a star, not a loop. I can think of one possibility, but it is a stretch. There may be an option for radio presets tied to the key, and if it can not find the radio, it may not code the key-specific options. That is why I posted my "Anyone with ideas" request. Maybe someone has first had experience with this, and not speculation.
