No sound from TV/Radio Headunit 2002 X5

Hi any help with this problem greatly appreciated.
Yesterday evening I started my car, the radio/tv headunit lit up as normal but no sound at all. I tried to select a different source i.e. CD changer but pressing the button done nothing. None of the buttons appear to work on the left hand side of the headunit on the right side everything works except the tone button.
I changed the BM54 radio module located in the spare wheel well about 8 months ago, as the last unit only had sound working on the drivers side speakers.
Here is a strange one..... the headunit started opening and closing about 2 months ago by itself whilst I was driving and this lasted for about 1 hour. I could hear the motor gears grinding as it kept trying to open itself even though it was already fully open. After parking the car for about 2 hours the problem went away
