Unhappy 4:3 Navi w/Tape deck with DICE issue

Hello X5 gods,

I have an E46 with 4:3 Navi with tape deck. I installed the DICE unit via my CD changer cable but when I hit mode on my radio, I get "no tape" but it never changes to CD changer mode. Also, when I connect my iPod to the DICE unit, the iPod is not charging. The screen does come on when the dock cable is connected but I don't think power is needed to make that happen. Is my DICE unit bad? Any help is much appreciated. I searched around but of course I'm finding X5 related issues...haven't found much else. Thanks guys!

It doesn't sound like the DICE unit is getting power, and therefor the vehicle isn't recognizing it is there. I would say that you either have a bad DICE unit or something is wrong with your wiring/connections.

Did you have a CD changer and was it working properly before you tried switching to the DICE unit? Also, try checking the fuse the is for the CD changer, possibly that got blown.

Good points. According to the previous owner, the changer was bad so it was removed but I'm not sure if that's the case or something else was wrong. I'll check the fuses as well, thanks. I heard some talk about disconnecting the battery is some sequence....can't quite remember it all but does that sound familiar?

If you haven't seen a CD changer work in the vehicle then I would start there. See if you can get your hands on a working OEM unit and swap it into your vehicle and see if it works. That will help to identify whether you have a vehicle issue or a DICE issue.

Does the vehicle have DSP?

Yeah, I was thinking of that but I have no idea where I'll be able to get my hands on an OEM changer without actually buying it. No, the car doesn't have DSP.

Most e46, e53, e38 and e39 model BMW's should have a compatible CD changer in them. In a city as large as New York there has to be someone you know that will let you borrow theirs for a few minutes
