I also thought that the ipod might have been detached from the cradle but its playing the music (I was able to listen to three songs before I switched it to cd trying to figure out if it would help regain control over my ipod), unless icelink has an internal buffer.

No internal buffer - the ice>link is merely a translation device between the iPod and BMW.

ICELINK: Problems and Suggestions

Do I have a bad Ice>link?
Mine, does the same thing... especially if it reaches the end of a playlist. I have been living with it, but it is becoming a bit annoying. I used to store my iPod in the trunk, but this issue forced me to relocate it to the center console so that if the unit locks I can disconnect the IceLink and reboot the iPod.

BTW three suggestions for Dension - (1) the default first menu item should be Playlist, it's the most used selection and would eliminate a step. (2) Replace Artist with Genre, even if you have a modest collection getting to "K"anye West or "L"enny Kravitz one click at a time is the definition of aggravating... at least with Genre you have only 10 to 20 choices and it would eliminate the need for me to creat smart playings for each of these categories. (3) Restore the ability to control the iPod manually while it is connected to the Ice. I do not forsee a day when all of the iPod functions are mirrored via the Ice's menu system so allow me to make changes while I am at stop lights via the iPod.

Thx - RSZ

Now I am thinking I should have bought a phatbox instead.

Ice>Link is the first product I bought that doesnt work as it says it should straight out of the box.

If you should require support, please contact myself or Dension's support line @ 866.822.3673. You haven given a few scenarios of your issues but have not given myself or the Dension a chance to assist in a solution.

There are a lot of happy ice>Link Plus users out there, no reason you shouldn't be one of them as well.

Getting to your playlists consists of 3 simple steps.

1) Press CD #6
2) press left arrow on radio or down arrow on steering wheel one time.
3) Press right arrow on radio or down arrow on steering wheel for +3 seconds.

I do not see Dension adding "Genres" to the menu simply because no one has really asked. You can use your 1-5 Playlist buttons as Genres if you wish, just add 1,2,3.... in front of the playlist name so that it comes up first as selections on the playlist hot buttons.

As for iPod UI - it is accessable from the steering wheel control, but the selection is deactivated when ID3 text is enabled. Again, hardly anyone uses it. Here are the procedures:

1) Deactivate ID3 text by going to CD #6>Setup>No Text
2) Press CD #6 again
3) Press Down arrow on steering wheel 2 times to scroll to "ACCESS iPOD UI"
4) Press Right arrow +3 seconds to activate iPod UI, follow instructions on iPod screen.

Playlists are key for navigating through the iPod - when used, these can be your biggest aid in listening.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I use playlist extensively due to the 5 preset restriction. I have 32 playlists, so that I can access all of iPod content while I am navigating the X. I've created playlists for audiobooks, podcasts, genres, normal playlists and a few artists. Conversely, I don't know anyone who has a 10+ gb iPod who enjoys (vs. suffers through) the "artist" menu selection. So, why not make "Playlist" the first menu selection on the next update? Next, since scrolling through artist is so difficult why not replace it with "Genre" which would eliminate the need to create playlist for them.

I would recommend that you poll users here as to the way they use the IceLink. If my viewpoint is in the minority, then continue as is... but I doubt it. Also, is the font and diplay shown on the iPod when connected to the IceLink necessary because it has to be the same as the ID3 text? If not, it would be great if you could allow the display (especially for the video ipods) go unchanged when connected... it adds to the wow factor for passengers and allows album covers to be displayed on the screen.

I hear what you're saying and will recommend it to Dension. Keep in mind what you are proposing only saves one press of the left button. That's it.

There is no way around this as the iPod goes into UART mode, as if it were connected to a computer. From the options you are looking for, you can always disable ID3 text display and get back into iPod UI mode - and have full functionality of the iPod, but you are limited to what is called "simple remote" mode.

You are asking a lot from the ice>Link - remember, we are working around the limitations of the iPod, it's not the fault of the ice>Link itself.

Thanks for the feedback!
