Aftermarket sound...

Just curious as to whether replacing the stock speakers without use of an aftermarket amp is worth it.I have DSP and Nav,but my wife says the sound is not great.Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have DSP as well and am able to get it to sound pretty good all oem with sub added, but did try a pair of aftermarket front speakers to see the sound difference. I bought a pair of JL audio VR650 CXi 6.5" speakers... which I still have like new in the box because they had no where near the bass reflex and clarity of the oem front doors, which really surprised me!

The only aftermarket speakers setup that always seems to get great reviews for the DSP system are the BSW stage 1 kit. But some say that while you gain high end clarity you loose the low end, so it doesn't sound right without upgrading the sub.

I bought an empth BSW 8" sub box and tried a couple of different subs, the hands down winner in quality and level of performance is the infinity reference 8" which I love now. Running it off of a 300 watt RMS directed amp with level control knob up front for on the go level adjustments.

The expensive part was why I was glad to find an empty box in great shape for a great price and the best sounding sub I tried cost less than half the price of the others I tried... then I already had the amp laying around unused as I pulled it from my last car before selling it. Total cost for sub upgrade was less than $300.

Does the 8" give you good enough lows?I saw all the threads on the 10" flat mount and sub build, and was thinking about that. Then I thought if I found a good enough 8",it might work out as well.I like your way of thinking...

That 8" infinity has as deep and clear lows as my old setup with a 10" JL W3, and sounds better and more clear than the 8" W6 I tried (that kept splitting the surround, getting it replaced with a W3V3 now as an alternative, still covered by the company I bought it through)

If there was a way to get a quality sound clip to accurately depict the clarity of the lows I would gladly do it, but I know there is no way in hell to do that with anything I have. (maybe the studio recorder for my friends band, the bass guitar setup?)

I am gonna look into that Infinity Weasel.Again thanks for the advice. This is my first luxury vehicle and like I said I want to treat it as such. The last suv I had was a Blazer with 3 12's and I just dont think thats what the X5 needs.

Same here, one of my last was a ford bronco 4x4 with a custom padded leather bench seat box in the rear with 3 Jl w3v2 10" subs on an oldschool rodek competition amp. I wouldn't do that to my new baby, besides, I need the cargo room quite often and would hate having to remove a box every weekend. The BSW bos tucks away nicely in the cubby where the stock subs were.
