BSW E53 Radio Upgrade - confused?!?!?

BSW's site offers an upgrade to the professional radio which offers mp3 compatibility:

"By replacing your BMW radio with a newer, Plug and Play (under 15 minutes!) version from BSW, you can add the latest technologies to your BMW:
  • Upgrade from that archaic cassette deck to an in-dash CD player!
  • Ability to add Fully Integrated Satellite Radio (Sirius Direct or XM Direct)
  • Ability to add iPod integration
  • Ability to add an Original BMW Auxiliary input (sold at your local BMW dealership)
  • Read MP3 / WMA burned CD's
And because this is a factory BMW Business CD unit, fit, finish, and quality are perfect. In fact, if someone put this in your car and didn't tell you, you'd never know!"

however, they state:

"This upgrade applies only to vehicles produced on or before 08/02; later vehicles already have this upgraded radio so this upgrade is not required."

I have an 04 E53, with nav. My radio is certainly not mp3 compatible, there is no 'aux in' that I can find nor any other way I can fit external sources.

I want to add mp3 and also backup cam, I would LOVE some help from someone who has done this.

Searching the forum just increases confusion ?!?!?

Sorry, total NOOB!

Your 2004 E53 has the pre-wiring for the Aux input. This was present in all X5s built from October 2002 on. You just need to buy the Aux input kit from BMW and install it. Here is the install guide to give you a sense of what is involved.

I do not think that the radios with MP3 capability came out until 2005. So, that would require a radio upgrade. The statement that all cars made after 8/02 have this radio is a little misleading. The radios got more features over time. The first feature was Aux input. Then, the radios got Sirius about a year later. Then, the radios got MP3 in 2005. Also, to get MP3, you would have to upgrade the CD changer.

Thanks for that, I will get the retrofit kit.

In the back, where the cupholders are, I have 2 x 3.5mm jacks titled AV in and out.

Is this anything to do with the kit you are suggesting?

The 2004 radio has text capability so you can add Sirius or XM and get the radio to scroll artist and song title. Beginning in 2005 the X5 business radio had MP3 capability but does not display ID3 tags just TR01, etc. So if you want to play a CD with MP3’s you can get the newer radio or get the newest (2006) 6 disc MP3 changer. It will play MP3 CD’s on your current radio with no ID3 tag info.

Thanks for the replies.

As usual, the more I look, the more options I get, and often the more confused I become

Anyway, at the moment, it's all a moot point as for some unknown reason, my radio power has failed and it won't even switch on (audio that is - the nav and obc still works fine)
