How do you tell if you have digital or analog DSP?

Thanks

Well, all DSP happens in the digital domain.

The BMW DSP amps take in analog signals from the tuner module and the tape deck and convert them to digital so they can be processed.

In addition, the earlier X5s had a coaxial digital cable from the CD changer to the DSP amp.

Later, some X5s are missing the cable. BMW decided that there wasn't any loss by sending analog out of the changer and sending it through the same A/D conversion as the tuner and the tape and the AUX signal.

And with their DSP system's sound quality, they were probably right.

So the way to tell is to see if you have the Digital Coax cable out of the changer or not.

Disclaimer: This is correct 99% of the time. There have been times there has been "digital DSP" (referring to the coaxial version) and the coax is missing if a CD Changer is not ordered with the vehicle.

It's rare - but it is a possibility.

I believe a couple of people have performed the retrofit here in the forum. I think better sound can be achieved with aftermarket componets rather than DSP.

It's been done. But it's not worth the work, much less the parts.

You need to get the amp, the sub box, and different speakers.
