Typical Best Buy install... grrrrr
Hey. Just wanted to vent a bit about the new to me 05' 4.4i. The previous owner had a Pioneer Avic something or other flip screen DVD/nav installed with headrest screens. Let's count the screw ups the installer made:
1- He actually cut through the wood CD cover on the dash to make a mounting hole to install the new radio directly over the old one. 2- In order to keep some steering wheel controls, he kept the stock radio, moved the cd player to the back, ran wires to the cd player and hooked up the new radio directly to the stock amp. This pretty much makes the only thing that works the volume control... but he used the variable outputs from the new radio, so you can control the volume with both. 3- The headrest insalls were sloppy as the day is long. The cuts were bad, he actually cut the entire bottom of the headrest and left it open like a flap and didn't even bother trying to sew it back up or even use adhesive. 4- Exposed wires for the headrest monitors hanging from the bottom of the seats. 5- He cut two more holes in the wood on the dash to install switches to allow dvd viewing while driving. Then installed gigantic rocker switches. It looks so awful I want to choke the idiot who did it. 6- The Pioneer isn't actually installed with any sort of installation kit... it basically is just held in by the stock radio and the wood he butchered. 7- I've never seen so many splices in my life. I mean, pretty much every wire has been cut, then it looks like he needed a little more length so he added another 6" to everything. I can't believe this person actually got paid to do this. I'm amazed that it even stayed together. So here's where I'm at: I have a stereo that makes me want to puke whenever I get into the car. I want to get my bluetooth and steering wheel controls back. My plan is to redo the hack mount he did with either a kit or some fiberglass work, install a proper aux input kit and just use the Pioneer sound for dvd and nav, hook the stock radio and cd player back up correctly. Also going to clean up the monitor installs and make them look a little less "Best Buy". Maybe I'll add a back up camera while I've got it all apart. Also going to add a second aux input jack so that we can run the ipod through it... yes I know it will be mono but I really don't care much. I'd actually prefer to rip out the whole damn thing and just make it stock, but the wife likes the nav for some reason. Anyway... I'll post some pics later if anyone wants a good laugh. |

PS... I used to install car stereos as a kid (around 15 years ago... right before tv's were becoming the norm), so while I'm new to the whole headrest monitor thing, pulling wires, working with glass and such isn't much of a concern.

Why did you buy it?
I would have run far, far away had I seen a fraction of what you described.

The rest of the car looks showroom new. I mean literally... the inside looks like it's new.
Plus I practically stole it when I found a couple oil leaks and the owner knocked $4k off because of them. (What it would cost to fix at dealership) |

On the plus side, BMW keeps archives of the wood if u ever want to take it all off, and get a new piece of trim piece.

The funny thing is that the previous owner thought this system was the cat's azz. Seriously... bragged on it forever. This guy was a class act all the way and a pleasure to deal with, but obviously wasn't in tune with decent install jobs.
My wife is getting tired of me telling her how much I hate it. Lol. |
