MID Versions X5 Compatibility

I have a 2002 X5 4.4i and the pixels on my MID we almost gone so I decided to try to fix it myself. I have a few years experience fixing laptops and misc other electronic devices so I did not think it would be a problem. However, it did not work I have spent way to much time trying to get the new ribbon cable installed and it still does not work. At this point I just want to purchase a replacement MID that someone has already fixed. Does anyone know what the difference is in the units. My MID has a white imput plug and I see that many of the other units from the 5 series BMWs have a black plug. I had been under the impresion that all of these vehicles had interchangable audio systems. My MID is the non DSP version with the phone buttom. Does anyone know what the difference is or if there is a difference between the units that have the black plug verses the white plug. I can not seem to find any information and I have been searching for a few days now.
