Is it really possible to recode this for a color display? I can't seem to get a definitive answer.

Is this what your's looks like? If not, can anyone tell me if this MKIV drive will work as an upgrade from my MKIII? I have a 16x9 color screen on my 2002 M3.

The MK3 and MK4 Drives are exactly the same for Color and Monochrome Navis. The MK2s were/are different(MK2c and MK2m).
You can reprogram MK3 and 4 with the posted manual. I've done that lots of time.

When you install a factory-new mk4 or 3 into a monochrome-car, you must follow these steps. Otherwise it will load the colorsoftware because of the factory-configuration and it doesn't work with the monochrome-screen.

The MK4 on the picture I think that is an e65 unit, or maybe for the japanese Navi-system. That is completely different to our system.

has anyone noticed that everyone who is saying that a monochrome MKIV can be coded to a color MKIV is from Europe? What do you think that's all about?

Recoding an MK4 (by VDO) is possible! You have to send it to "Siemens VDO Automotive Repair Center" in your Country. They would recode your MK4.

I'm from (Old) Europe too.

The US Nav-units are the same as in europe and the procedure also works in US.

Sending to VDO is not necessary.

MK4 is it a paper weight question and could Navtweak be an answer?

I just thought I would resurrect this thread I have posted this on BMW NAV but there is lot of expertise here now in this forum

Reason I ask is another forum member has sent me one he has bought from
Ebay it won't work with his colour screen and he asked if it could have
been fried by being incorrectly unplugged so so I said I would test it for him.

First thing that caught my eye was the sticker that says -

22.08.03 14:22:59
Fahrgestell : FY82475
Laenderkennung :F1
Display BMWM01S
Update Status :IO
I don't remember seeing a sticker like that before, can someone
translate the German words for me please?

if so would a sticker on it with - Display BMWMO1S indicate it was a
business radio MK4, Just a guess but would the M = Monochrome?

I must admit I have not heard of any MK4s being fried but I suppose it
is possible

It also has the normal BMW Sticker and the part number is -
65906920182-04
HW:1.01/SW:1.2

As far as I know that part number is one used for a colour display
version of the MK4 but the other sticker puzzles me anyone help confirm
if this is suitable for the colour display

From this thread I gather we believe these can be recoded is that definitely a dealer only option or has any one worked out a home made way to do it?

Do we know what the dealer coding does?

I am thinking could Nav tweak be enhanced to produce a Bootable CD that could do this?

And if so I guess that might make a lot of people very happy as I bet there are a lot of MK4 paperweights out there

Lastly if they can not be recoded did anyone ever post pictures of inside a monochrome MK4 showing any part missing so I can double check this one?

Thanks

Hi !

Sorry, but the MKIV that you bought is for monocrome. See
Display BMWM01S that means that is for monocrome.

For color say Display BMWC01

Regards.

PD: some times, the Part number may be the same, but the diference is in the internal eeprom (Color or monochromatic)

Hi thanks for your reply what exactly are you using to do this?
Is it dealer equipment or something you have at home?

I am happy we have proved this unit is a monochrome one it even sends messages to my message centre in my car (in German)

I have read appys comments but I don't own a BMW The car I am working on is a Rover 75 which has the full BMW nav and Ibus installed

Could you tell me more about the equipment you used to recode the MK4 can I build one using a spare PC? if so I would expect the procedure might work on the Rover the same as it does in a BMW, worth a try don't you think?

If not does anyone know a BMW dealer in the UK that has done this?

I went to dealer, because you need a bmw gt-1 to recode the mk4
It was new for the dealer, he never did this before.
So he let me do the job
I don't know if a rover dealer can do this.
