Problems on upgrading OS MKI to V26

I have a MKI nav unit in my E39 540iaT, current version 1-1/72.
When trying to upgrade to V26 (1-1/80) the system says that the OS CD is correct ant starts the upgrade. When the upgrade is about halfway the CD ejects automatically and the system says that it's finished completly and tells me to remove the CD and press OK. After doing this I found out the OS was not upgraded and is still 1-1/72.
I used a good quality CD-R and burnt it at the lowest speed possible (4x) using alcohol 120%.
I also burnt V24 (nero image) wich automatically burnt at maximum, same story here, it was however recognised as a valid OS CD by the system. So I assume burn speed is not so much the issue here.
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Arjen- I don't think that v26 has any upgrades or updates for your drive. I think v26 is for MkIV DVD Nav drives only.

Thanks for the reply, but BMW SI bulletin says differently (see the actual text below) The thing is that after upgrading the system says that I upgraded to version 8.0, after rebooting it appears that nothing has changed en in the setting menu it still stated 1-1/72.

According to the information on this site, version 1-1/80 should be present from version V17 onwards, this means that it's on every following version CD until a new version is available.

When I want to upgrade to version 1-1/80 wich CD do I have to burn, 17 or any CD after that??

Thanks,

Arjen

programming the vehicle.
Do not replace the Navigation Computer.
Note: Connect an approved battery charger before loading software.
Turn on ignition to Term R or Term 15. 1.
Using the iDrive enter into the Navigation Menu. 2.
Remove the map CD 3.

the latest software.
11.
Drive the vehicle before delivering to the customer to approve the correct function and displaying
(Interstate Icons) of the Navigation system.
12.

NAVIGATION COMPUTER REPLACEMENT MK III
When replacing a defective MK III computer, a configuration signal is required to allow the new
computer to load the correct software for its respective application. This is generated by using DIS coding
program "Coding ZCS C43.0" or higher and Navigation System operating software CD V 17.1 or V26.
Connect DIS/GT1 tester to vehicle 1.
From the DIS Coding/Programming select "1 ZCS Coding" 2.
Select appropriate engineering series (E38, E39, etc.) 3.
Select "4 conversion" 4.
Select "3 IKE/Kombi" 5.
Select "2 Language" 6.
At prompt "Is the CD-ROM present?" – select "Yes",
but do not insert Navigation CD into the Nav
Computer yet!

7.
First select the main language and then an additional language (the choices are: English, French, Italian,
Spanish, German)
8.
Select announcer's voice gender: male or female. 9.
After activation of the automatic coding, the DIS tester tells you to follow the instructions on the monitor
for Navigation CD installation.
10.
Place the Navigation CD into the navigation computer CD drive. 11.
Important:
Do not switch ignition OFF during software loading procedure.
Once loading has been completed, remove the CD and then confirm completion by pressing the rotary
push-button on the monitor.
12.
Turn ignition OFF for 10 seconds, then turn it ON and conduct a functional check. 13.
After this step has been finished, encode the Navigation computer in the regular manner using the path "1
Recoding".
14.
TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS
The following problems may occur during the software loading procedure:
The message
"CD defective" appears on the display screen.
The message
"Fault during programming" appears on the display screen.
The message
"The system is restarting" appears on the display screen.
The installation process has stopped and the display screen is blank and the power LED on the navigation
computer is off. The CD will not eject.
These complaints are usually the result of a faulty Navigation Operating software CD.
For points 1-3 for error messages that appear on the display screen, check for the correct software version
and try loading a new Navigation CD.
For a CD that will not eject from the Navigation computer follow the procedure below:
Remove the Navigation computer. 1.
Unplug the voltage supply (blue connector). 2.
Reconnect the voltage supply and immediately press the eject button repeatedly until the CD in the
drive is ejected.
3.
Insert a new Navigation CD and restart the installation process. 4.

I have the exact same problem with the MKI in my 98 E38. It says it is successfully upgraded to V8.0 but the screen then shows it's still at 1/72.

There are 2 sets of nomenclature for the old MKI, SW and MMI. I have seen that the Nav has one set of software and the Video Module has another. The screen shows the one for the VM. The MKI nav can't work without the VM as they have a special small connection plug the none of the other later VMs have and also the MKII and later can work without a VM but MKI can't. The screen will never show higher than 1-1/72 even for SW of 8.0 They stopped upgrading MKIs at Ver 15. 15 and all above give you the same. I had a MKI from the factory in my car and then went to MKIII and MKIV.
