Navigation retrofit in 2001 E39

E39 2001 525i

Background:
Car has TV
Widescreen Front Monitor
CD Changer

The car has no Navigation, it came stock from the factory like this and it seems to be fairly common on the Australian delivered 525i's

What i want to do is purchase a MK3 drive and either replace the existing analogue tv or somehow get both working at the same time

What do i need and how much is it all going to cost, what are the steps involved?

I head that there was some loom you could get that would basically link the tv to the navigation but the computer would still recognise it as two devices so i can have tv and navigation running at the same time.

Any help would be fantastic

hey, I'm in exactly the same situation as you.
check out this thread for more details

http://www.xoutpost.com/electronics/...fit-query.html

there are some part numbers there for the retrofit loom you need

if your car has the monitor you will at least have the white six pin sitting on the top left corner of the wheel arch. if you are lucky it will also have the black six pin which connects to the speed sensor and reverse light for a fully plug & play solution.

if you dont have the black 6 pin (like me) you will need to tap 2 wires

i will be hoping to complete mine over the weekend and will let you know the outcome

i cant see your picture, but i assume you have the white, but not the black?

whether you have it or not, 61128384473 or 61126915132 is the cable you need. (1 supports Mk3/4 and the other supports all versions)
try ebay, there are also a few online shops that sell them

this cable will allow you run both tv and nav

looks like lots of aftermarket equipment in there, i'm not a pro but i imagine that might cause issues with getting the sound/muting to work

In regards to the loom, which one would i need, they are both a different part number which means they have something different about them, and i can't figure out what it is.

So basically all i do is purchase the following
1. MK3 computer
2. 61126915132 wiring loom
3. some electrical wire for tapping
4. gps antenna

+ some brackets for mounting the navigation drive and we should be set to go?

In regards to the aftermarket locs, these basically just send the audio signals through two aftermarket amplifiers then back into the speakers so it shouldn't be an issue.

61128384473 - also has an extra connection for the trimble unit that is required for mk 1/2 nav units. it is wired so that it also supports mk 3/4
61126915132 - does not have wiring for the trimble unit so is only capable of supporting mk 3/4 units

either harness will do, you should find one on ebay or order through a dealer.

you will also need the following bits and pieces

GPS Antenna 65 90 8 375 944------------\
GPS Antenna Mount 65 90 8 360 725 ------> these 3 can usually be ordered as one on ebay, either as BMW or aftermarket
GPS Cable 61 12 8 377 434---------------/

Computer Bracket 65 90 8 361 459
Boot/trunk Panel Cover 51 47 8 190 763

Won't work there.

It needsto be mounted on the parcel tray, flat, with clear view of the sky

The original antenna position is at the rear of the parcel tray under the parcel tray lining. Lots of room for a magnetic antenna there.
