Note that there isn't a specific harness for the 4:3, it's the same as the one for the 16:9. BMW has a retrofit nav harness - BMW wiring harness

61-12-6-910-148 X5 harness w/DSP. I've seen them on eBay and posted in the forum classifieds.

I started my retrofit this morning but it looks like cable I purchase from BMW 611 6 910 148 is the wrong cable. going through the retrofit instructions there are numerous inconsistancies. For example looking at the retrofit instructions http://www.bmwmotorsports.org/pdf/X5...r%2010%2F00%22 the cable is missing A3, A4, A5, A6 and the cable I have has other connectors which I have no idea what they are. I have attached a picture, Please someone help me out. Is this the correct cable, its a OEM part from BMW.

It seems to be a navigation / DSP harness, not the retrofit.

This is what I thought the retrofit harness looks like 15 feet long

I can't help you with your original question unfortunately, but I was wondering, this retrofit requires coding, how are you going to have it coded. My guess is that only the dealer can code it, that said perhaps you should have the dealer do the retrofit. Quite frankly this job looks incredibly difficult given the history of BMW installation instructions leaving out steps, not to mention the numerous changes that took place to the X5 during it's production run.

If you do manage to get it all done yourself, Wow!

Did you get a nav harness that you are trying to identify? If so, we can probably help sort it out. Dmonksfield did his retrofit more than a year ago, so he might not catch this post to respond.

At a high level, you have the retrofit harness described pretty well. The only exception is that I think it has the same type of radio plugs (round pin) on both the dash area and the trunk area. That is one of the reasons that many people choose the X5 fully nav/DSP harness over the retrofit harness, because the X5 harness has the BM53/BM54 plugs in the trunk. Also, the full nav harness is considerably less expensive than the retrofit harness. Finally, I am not sure that the retrofit harness is even still available from BMW.

This is a challenging project, but fortunately there are dozens of very well documented retrofit projects here and over on the Bimmerboard navigation forum. Yes, the dealer must code it, but that is spelled out in the retrofit guide; most dealers only charge 1 hour of labor for a nav recode. Also, folks have approached dealers about this project, but many dealers will not touch a retrofit. A couple guys with no prior car audio electronics experience recently completed retrofits, so this is within the capability of most enthursiasts.

Go for it 740iL, and keep us posted. Even if you get a full nav harness and not the retrofit harness. That is perfectly OK, as that harness is what many people use. Essentially, you remove the speaker wiring from the new harness, and you only have to splice over like three wires at the DSP amp plug into the new harness. You will also have to run the reverse signal and wheel speed sensor wires into the new harness, but that is relatively easy as well.

hi just purchased a board monitor ,dvd computer,and wiring harness out of
a 2004 x5 to fit in my 2004 x5 do i need to buy a radio unit ,and will the wiring for the sat nav fit the radio unit going to start the project in a few weeks
