MK4 player not accepting disc

My MK4 player has been on the fritz. I was on a trip, using the navigation. It stopped working with no provocation. I went to eject the disc to see if it was dirty or damaged somehow. It would not eject. After quite a bit of effort (and reading the articles here), I decided to disassemble and eject the disc manually. Now I've got it back together, but when I attempt to put the disc back in, the player doesn't recognize it and pull it in. I'd have to force it in and that's clearly not the solution. Any ideas? Is my player shot? What went wrong? Thank you.
