Navigation failure: First intermittent, now not working at all:

Hi All, I have a 2000 BMW X5 (4.4) that has been having issues with the Navigation system. Here is the progression of the problems over the last month:

1) Nav CD was stuck in Navigation unit, I was able to remove it by disconnecting, then reconnecting the power cable from it while pressing the eject button.

2) After Nav CD was removed, the display worked fine but the radio would play for approx 2 minutes and then shut off. Turning the radio's power button off and back on, allows the radio to play again for 2 minutes or so before shutting off again.

3) The BMW dealership diagnosed the issue as a bad (MK1) Navigation unit. I purchased a MK3 unit from ebay and tried it. Once installed, the BMW logo appeared on the Nav display, I then installed the software upgrade cd (ver 4.7) and the screeen went black and hasn't come back on.

4) I took it back to the BMW dealership, they stated that a) the MK1 is bad, b) the MK3 is not compatible with my vechicle (only MK1 and MK2 works supposedly) and c) the video module is bad.

I just want to get the Nav and radio working and I'm just not convinced that I'm getting accurate info from Dealership. Does anyone have experience, suggestions or insight with these issues?

First, your care would have come with the MKII unit, not a MKI unit. BMW discontinued the MKI around 9/1997.

Second, the MKIII is definitely plug-and-play compatible with your car. Dozens of folks have upgraded from MKII computers to MKIII and MKIV computers.

All that said, the diagnosis is correct. You probably have a dead MKII computer. When the nav computer dies, your radio, if you have DSP, will shut off after 30 seconds or so, because the DSP amp can not find the nav computer. (The two are co-dependent in nav-equipped cars.)

Also, I suspect that the MKIII you got is dead too. If you can not get the screen to come up with the MKIII installed, then it may have croaked. Did you try a different OS upgrade?

Lastly, do you have the Television option on the main menu of your screen? If so, try disconnecting the nav computer entirely and see if the system works. You may have to reroute the blue plug formerly connected to the nav computer and connect that into your TV/Video module to do this test.

Hi Brian, you are correct, my unit is the MKII. In addition, the OS upgrade that I tried is 2.71. No, I do not have the television option on my screen, however I'm willing to try any additional suggestions that you might have to get this thing operational. Thanks for your feedback.

Your MKII is probably gone, so there is no point in messing with that anymore. So, let's focus on the MKIII that you have.

First thing, be extra cautious about disconnecting the MKIII while it is still powered up, because that can fry the computer. Search on "MKIII dead" or "MKIII battery" here and on the Bimmerboard, and you will see several examples of folks who have killed their MKIII computers. The key is to wait until the red light on the nav computer turns off before you remove power.

Now, I would try to upgrade the nav computer with the earliest OS version that you can download. Try either the V17 or V18 disk, if you can track one down. The challenge is that not many of the early OS images are still out there, and everything from V22 and up is the same for the MKIII. Try reinstalling the MKIII and then put the OS disk in the computer; if it does not immediately upgrade, try driving around with the OS update disk in for a few days. If that does not work, then the MKIII may have departed as well.

I will try your recommendations (with great caution) and see what happens. I'll provide some feedback either way. Thanks again.
