No. The firmware doesn't work on iDrive systems. Those systems are "microsoft" based and you'll need to go to BMW to get your "system updates" :P

Does update with V28 CD on a MK3 will work ?
OR will it damage the current software on it since the highest possible version on the MK3 was around V22 (i read about it somewhere) ?

there you can download (@high speed) all versions from V17 to latest V28.

I also downloaded the V28 and the KeyCD there to update an "old" MK3 and it worked without any problems.

No, you can update your MK3 with any CD/firmware-version you like.
The nav unti will never take an firmware image that does not fit.
But I think there will be no difference, if you upgrade it with an V28, V27 or older verion CD (down to the latest update for MK3 units)

(I also just upgraded an MK3 with the V28)
If the current version of your MK3 is lower than V16, after the upgrade it will ask you for the KeyCD, which is only a few MB in size and can be downloaded here:

and: be patience with the upgrade process!
I takes several(!) minutes. NEVER EVER turn off ignition, disconnect the battery or something like this until the update has finished.

Does the MAP/ROADMAP C'D/DVD also have to burned at MODE2 for an MK3 or does that only matte for the OS Update ?

I burned both in Mode1 and successfully upgraded an MK3.
