Mark IV refreshes every 8 seconds - why?

Hi - new to the forum and to my X5.

Its a 3.0d sport auto , April 2003 model.

I love it to bits, but the Navi Monitor has a fault which means the screen refreshes - blinks - every 8 seconds.

Every function including tape, cd, radio, telephone and Sat Nav work perfectly but the refresh is anoying.

Anyone had a similar fault or got any ideas how to solve this - other than replacing the unit at £300+.

John.

When you say refreshes is that a complete restart, back to the BMW splash screen each time, or does it startup and flicker?

Hi Cobra thanks for your reply.

The screen goes black and rolls up the screen quickly like a wipe and then is back again all in about 0.25 seconds. It is as if I degaused my PC screen.

It does not alter any function and the audio remains constant without interuption or noise.

Just this 9 second - timed it ealier today - refresh or blink of the screen.

I have also today upgraded the sofware to Version 28 and perspective view with all Europe maps, traffic alert and speed camera locations but the fault remains exactly the same - no worse - no better.

Any ideas?

John,

What is the NAV unit doing in the boot when the screen refreshes?

Does the eject light flash?

What happens when you revert to the Blue basic screen, ie remove the fuse to the SAT Nav, hence no power. If the screen refreshes on the basic blue screen it is not the SAT Nav.

Mark

Hi - have just bought a direct and perfect tested replacement for the Navi Monitor on eBay for $749 delivered.

Now I shall see whether it really is a faulty unit I have.

Hope it is to be honest because if it is not, I am back to square 1.

But at least I could sell the replacement unit again!!!

Hi DevonJohn

My e39 started to do this a couple of weeks ago......and i spent a long time trying to diagnose the fault. For me, it worked out to be the Traffic Master module....it would not even turn on.....and was causing the Nav screen to flicker every 9 seconds....

I found the harness in the boot which connects to the harness to the monitor at the front and just unplugged it....and that got rid of the flickering screen.

So if you also have Traffic Master module (you will have a TM button where the cup holders are supposed to be in the front) just disconnect the module from the harness in the boot!

Hope this helps you.................

Many thanks for your reply.

Was it really that simple??????

Did you blink happen exactly every 9 seconds?

I do indeed have the TM button to the right of the screen and like you - it doesn't work because I havn't subscribed to it.

Where abouts will I find the TM module and what does it look like? Do you have a picture or know where I might find one?

If this really is the only fault, I shall be putting that replacemnt Navi Monitor I have just bought back on eBay as soon as I get it!

I cannot beleive that a simple fault like that wouldn't be know by BMW!!!

DevonJohn....its was just that simple....

try pressinfg the TM button at the front....does it switch on the traffic master module??....if not.....(this is what was happening to me...)....then it make well be the TM as TM should work even if you havent subscribed to it!

the TM module is located in the boot, mine was above my MK4 DVD satnav drive...but some also mount it behind the CD changer.

do you have a TV module (it has a blue plug and a white plug and a FME atanae cable) ??....if so then trace the blue plug cable and it should connect to another blue plug which has two blue plugs.....one if which is connected to the TM module. So you will need to unplug the blue plug that is going to the TM and then unplug the blue plug that is going in to the TV module and plug that in to where the TM module was plugged in to.

Hope that makes some sense.......Im in Paris on business as the moment... and therefore i cannot take any photos......

I hope your problem should be just as easy!!!

let me know if you need any further info.....

Hi again - thanks for your most helpful and speedy response.

No my TM button does nothing.

I do have an active TMC sat nav disc.

I had assumed the TM button didnt work because I hadnt subscribed.

I do have the TV module with the blue and white plugs going into the back of my Navi Monitor.

I haven't found the other end yet but will look as soon as I can.

My Mk IV Sat Nav, telephone blue tooth, cd changer, dvd player, remote headphones sender and freeview box are all in the rear left hand side stowage box. So it is pretty crowded in there!

I notice that the Sat Nav DVD unit has the GPS antenna unit on top of it.

I think I understand what you mean by plugging and unplugging the two blue plugs to cut off the TM. Just got to find them.

To be completely dim I guess the two blue plugs must be in the boot near the Mk IV unit and not in the front passenger footwell near the Navi Monitor?
