Where can i get updated software for the factory fitted Sat Nav in my 2002 Mini Coope

Apologies if this has been answered a million times before, but I can't seem to find any info if it exists!

I have a 2002 Mini Cooper S with the inbuilt, factory fitted Sat Nav system. However, the Sat Nav system is now total tosh and I assume that it hasn't been updated from the day it was originally bought in 2002.

Does anyone know if you can update the software on this system, and if so, how? I've looked at the various web forums but can't make hide nor hair of it all as I can't even work out what version of the Sat Nav system I have.

I've read you can download an update and burn it onto CD, but not sure if this applies to my version or what version I would need to download. Any help would be appreciated.

Go to "Set" or "Settings" on your SatNav. Your software version should be displayed as something like 3-3/31. It is a standard BMW system. As such - as long as you understand what you are doing (!!) you should have no problems updating. All the guides as to how to do it are readily available on this most excellent forum.....

You need to know if you have a MK IV or MK III nav computer. If your car was built after September 2002 then it should have a MK IV which will benefit a lot from the latest Nav software. If it's a Mk III then you can get some small improvements, but probably not a lot unless you swap it out for a Mk IV. The first digit of the version number will tell you the type of system you have.

Mike, why do you say 3-3/31? Do all Minis have 3 as the second digit of the software version?

All 2002 MINIs will have a CD-based (i.e. MK III) nav computer in them. MINI didn't start using DVD-based (i.e. MK IV) nav computers until somewhere in the middle/end of the 2003 model line. Thus, if you have a 2002 MINI, then it will indeed have a CD-based nav computer in it (and so you are very limited with the nav operating system updates you'll be able to get for it).

The version info shown in the settings (or Set) menu for all (current) MINIs will read either 3-1/xx or 4-1/xx where the 3 refers to the nav computer type (i.e. CD-based MK III or DVD-based MK IV) and the 1 refers to it having a premium full color screen (which all MINIs have). The xx will be the current version number of the nav operating system software that you have installed.

According to the following page, the highest version you can install in a CD-based MK III nav computer is 3-1/63 which relates to the v22 nav operating system update CD:

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all-...ystem-faq.html

Basically, BMW/MINI stopped updating the operating system in the older CD-based MK III nav computers back in August of 2003. Only the newer DVD-based MK IV systems seem to have further updates provided (they are currently up to 4-1/80 in the v28 update CD).

You can download the latest (for your car) v22 update CD from here:

http://www.xoutpost.com/articles/all-...ng-system.html

Also, don't forget that you can update the map data CDs as well (which includes updates to the maps themselves, the address database, as well as the Points of Interest like restaurants, gas stations, etc.). The most current version of the map CD for North America is either 2007-1 or 2006-2. You can purchase a CD for your particular region (or the entire 8 CD set for all of North America) directly from NavTeq from here:

http://www.navteq.com/updates/updates.html

A single region CD is $129 or the entire 8 CD set is $199.

I hope this helps some.

BTW, it's a simple Plug-n-play "swap" to exchange the CD-based MK III nav computer in your MINI with a newer DVD-based MK IV version if you care to do so. I know of folks who have located them in wrecked MINIs and made the swap sucessfully. You can also purchase the DVD-based nav computers on sites like eBay, but they can be quite expensive.

Sorry! Yet another typing cock-up. It should have read 3-1/31. Read the "Maven's" previous post. It's accurate & true .

The reason I ask is because I know someone with a Range Rover, their Nav is version 3-2/31 and they do have a full colour Nav monitor. They are running this version because they use the off road guidence which is not available if they update to any of the newer BMW software versions.

That's interesting because the 2 in the second position also indicates a radio-nav monochrome unit for a BMW.
