Angry Navigation System displays incorrect current location

hello all,

I have a 2004 X5 and my nav system displays a totally incorrect current location from time to time (it's happening about twice a week now). It completely loses itself and displays a location that's totally not anywhere near where I'm at.

Recently, I was using the nav system to direct me somewhere and all was fine and then it lost itself and, of course, started to give me erroneous directions because it thought it was somewhere else than where I actually was! This happened twice and it is has really gotten me upset!

The problem only started to happen about October 2006; prior to that, I've had no problems. Last month I took it into the dealer and, of course, they could not replicate the problem, so they upgraded the software (from v3 to v4), thinking that it was going to solve the problem.

Well, that didn't do it and it is still happening. I'm having to take it back to have them replace the unit or antenna or something, because this certainly is not normal.

Has anyone else heard of this problem?

Also, one other important question: On the GPS map screen, where the globe icon is displayed in the upper-right corner, sometimes for me it is just the globe and other times it is the globe with the letters "GPS" written on it. Most of the time is just the globe by itself. Is this normal or it is supposed to be the opposite (i.e., always with the "GPS" written on it)?

Thanks,
Nuspieds

You should have the globe plus the GPS letters all the time. If GPS is not present, you are not getting a satellite signal.

I would suggest that you drive your car, and when the problem develops, quickly go into service mode and see what is happening.

To access service mode: select SETTINGS, then press and hold LH side of MENU button and wait.

Check your sensor values - wheel sensor, forward/reverse, and gyro
Wheel sensor should increase proportionally to speed. Direction should be forward unless in reverse gear. Gyron should be around 2500mV, and swing up and down as you go around in a circle.

Check your GPS status. If you have a GPS fault, it will show here.
If you do see a GPS fault, then check the GPS antenna connections, check the cable, replace the antenna, and then only when all else has been checked, consider replacing the nav computer (which has the GPS receiver build in)

Hi,

Thanks a lot for that explanation and suggestion!

And I figured that the GPS letters should always be present. I will certainly take this information to my dealer.
