Newbie Navigation Help

Hi,

firstly i'd like to give a big HELLO! to all X5world subscribers!.

i have a mk2 navigation system for e39 bmw (2000/W), but the screen does not have an option for 'GPS Navigation' as expected.

i am considering upgrading to the mk4 DVD computer, but was wondering why the navigation option is not listed on the screen.

i checked the computer, which has 2 thick wires attached to the back of it, however, could not find an antenna connection.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Mk2 has a separate GPS receiver, the GPS receiver talks to the nav computer via data lines. The GPS antenna is plugged in to the GPS receiver.

If Navigation is not appearing in the menu, then the nav unit is not talking to the car over the ibus, or it is unplugged. Check also the white connector on the TV tuner.

My first question is... are you sure that you have navigation installed in the car? It sounds like you have the TV-only option. (Or, your car has both TV and navigation, but the nav computer has completely failed.) You can upgrade to a MKIV.

i'm pretty sure i have the navigation system installed, but most likely the unit has failed, i did notice the cd was ejecting itself sometimes...i'm hoping the upgrade to mk4 fixes this.

If you have the CD drive back there, you definitely have navigation. So, I am guessing that the unit is dead. The MKIV will probably fix it and make your navigation life wonderful.

Rico,
This is so strange. I have exactly the same problem but with a MK1. At least I now have good indication why it's not showing on the menu. I will also upgrade to MK4 but try to do in stages so I will see how/if it works with a 4:3 screen. I don't know how it will look: ok, squished 16:9, chopped-16:9, letter-box, or who knows what...

I am not 100% certain, but I am pretty sure that the MKIV detects the screen size and appropriately sets its display output. Therefore, the MKIV will look totally normal on the 4:3 display. It just has more room to display a bigger map on the 16:9.
