Thumbs up How to upgrade sat nav

Hi all, i have just bought a 52 plate X5 and it has sat nav. The disc in it says 2000-2001 and i feel that i wouldlike to upgrade it if possible, there seems little info in the restaurants etc sections too, seems to show me town halls and thats about it !! How do i upgrade this, is it via disc or a new system.
Also on a separate note i wonder how much it would cost to add tv to it?
Many thanks in advance for any help you guys and gals can give. Cheers.

Go to www.navteq.com to buy the latest disk for your nav. They are the ones who manufacture the disk updates for BMW (and many other makes).

It is very easy to add TV. You can buy the parts yourself and create a simple wiring harness, all for around $400 - $500. Or, check out www.bimmernav.com for a complete TV upgrade kit.

Hi scully,

First thing you need to do is work out what type of sat nav stytem you have, CD or DVD, this will determine what map disc you need.

Do you know if the system firmware has been updated at any time.

To find out:
Go to the main menu. From there, click on the "SET" or "SETTINGS" selection. The type of your nav computer and OS will appear on the upper right corner of the screen.

The first digit tells you which version of the nav computer you have, and the last two digits tell you the OS version.

If the first digit is a "3," you have a MKIII computer. If you have a MKIII, then the newest OS version is 3-1/63.

If the first digit is a "4," you have a MK4 computer. If you have a MK4, then the newest OS version is 4-1/91.

OR

Look at the nav computer (the drive that holds the map cd) if it has DVD written on the front, then its a DVD based system, if not then its a CD based system, a mk3 (probably).

If you have a mk4 then you need a 2007-1 high dvd, if a mk3 then a 2007 map disc. Probably a good idea to upgrade the firmware as well.

Hope this helps

John

Wicked John, thanks very much.
Ok, my sat nav reads SW4-1/12
That seems to me that the mk4 version wont take the 2007-1 cd or certainly wont according to a similar thread i spotted earlier. Also how do i update etc etc.

BMW changed the map data format a while ago. You need to do an OS update to read the current maps.

4-1/12 thats a bit old mate, download this file

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PT4NNB58

and then use something like imgburn and write a new firmware cd.

then try your new map cd.

there are a few nice features that you will need to turn on once the firmware has loaded.

Once you have downloaded the file, unzip it (using winzip or similar) into a sub-dir on your pc.

Then use imgburn or similar (http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download) to burn a new (blank) cd with the new downloaded firmware image.

eg:
install imgburn.
then run.
open v29.mds (from sub-dir).
select "mode write" from menu.
press write (cd limage at bottom).

Burn at 1x speed.

When its finished writing your new firmware cd,
goto the car open the drivers door,
goto the dvd nav computer wait for the red led on the drive to go out,
then press eject on drive,
eject the map disc,
switch ign to pos 1, leave door open.
insert firmware disc into drive, follow instruction on nav screen.
wait (approx 6 mins) till sat nav asks to eject cd and reboot.
eject cd,
confirm reboot.

thats it.

Do not swich off ignition or close the door when doing the upgrade.

Hope this helps.

John
