NAV and stereo stopped working in 01 X5...

I am looking into purchasing a 2001 X5 for my daily driver. I have found a nice one locally but has one potentially serious problem. The factory navigation system does not work. Also, the stereo only works for literally 1-2 minutes and then shuts off. Is this a common problem in early X5s? Is this an easy fix? If not, would it be easy the replace the factory nav/headunit with an after market piece "non-nav?" The owner said the dealer quoted him four thousand dollars to replace the computers? I don't really care about having the NAV but I need the stereo to work.

Thanks!

PS: Here is a picture of the interior that the owner sent me. He said it had the upgraded sound system. Can you tell if it does from this pic?

It is hard to tell from the picture if the X has the upgraded sound system, however if it does, there will be button somewhere near the radio/ nav that says dsp.

Sorry to get off topic but what color trim is that? I've never seen it...

The trim looks like someone swapped the 4.6is titanium trim into the vehicle.

As for the radio cutting out, it sounds to me like the nav drive itself may have gone bad, which is the controller for the system (including the interface to the radio). You can pick up a used MkIII nav drive for well under $500 and should be good to go.

To tell if it has DSP (the upgraded sound system), the easy way is to look in the back rear compartment and if there is a unit filling that space that has 2 small sub woofers then you do have it. If not, then you don't.

I'm really surprised someone would have ordered an X5 with nav but without the automatic climate control.

If it's a great deal, make it. I think you'll be happy with it.

I agree... I've never actually seen an X in the U.S. without automatic climate control...

Must be like the 04 X3's, where if you didn't order premium you really got a basic, basic, basic X...

Anyway back on OT...

Is the price good? I'd suggest maybe finding another X with better equipment. Maybe skip one with nav, but ensure that it has a stereo that works...

Plus auto climate control is a nice thing to have
