MkIII doesn't store addresses?

Hey all! I'm a new here and have read the FAQs and searched for answers to my problem but didn't find an answer. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. 2002 BMW E39 3-1/41

Here's my problem, I enter an address and get directions, no problems so far. When I stop for gas and restart the car, the address info is forgotten by the NAV system. It doesn't ask if I want to resume either.

I can't find the address in the "last destination" list. In fact, I haven't been able to store ANY address or destination that could be retrieved later. The Last destination selection in the menu is grayed out.

Is this normal? Or is it just operator error? Thanks for any pointers. The users manual makes me believe that this should work. Seem like there is some memory that isn't working...

I'll be uploading the OS to see if it helps, but I doubt it.

Thanks
Dan

Sounds like something is amiss. In our 01 X5, upon restarting, it asks something to the effect of 'Continue Guidance?'. Also, in the address book, there's a section called Last Destinations.

That is very strange. Even when you fully disconnect power, I think that the nav computer saves your last address. The only time I have seen it fully clear the address input screen is when you reload an OS. I wonder if it is losing power completely when you shut off the car, and it is going through some harsh crash/reboot when you restart.

I would check the blue plug and confirm that the pins that provide unswitched power are actually providing a continuous +12V when the car is switched off.

Thanks for the tip Brian. I'll check, but when I remove the key, the Nav player still has a red light on for 5 min or so. So it must be getting some form of unswitched power.

vinuneuro, I agree, I "should" see that message, but I don't. I can "see" the "last destination" in the menu, I can't "select" it.

You have 2002 BMW E39 3-1/41
Try upgrading to 3-1/63 version, which is a worthwhile change. It may also cure your problem if the problem is caused by a software bug.

Remember: OS discs for upgrades must be Mode2/Form1 otherwise the upgrade won't work.

Tried the OS upgrade (v26, v27, v27.1) last night. Didn't work. It said the CDROM was loading (orange font) and just hung. waited 30 minutes.
removed the CDROM and put map cd back in and it's back to they way it used to work. That is, not working.

Then you likely have faulty flash-RAM memory chips. Would require new memory chips to be fitted. Try asking VDO-Siemens in Germany if they would repair it for you.

Let me know what you find out. I waiting for my extended warranty to finish its transfer from the previous owner to see if that will cover it.

If it doesn't, has anyone opened up one of these units? Is the Memory socketed or soldered in?
