Coding VIN & vehicle on a Mk3 - requires OS CD?

I have installed a Mk3 into my traded E46, but want to code the VIN and Vehicle type from default (blank and 7er). Does this require the re-loading of the OS from CD after coding?

I don't have the Resler interface yet so am just thinking ahead (was hoping it would arrive today).

Am a little nervous of loading a Mk3 as I don't want to brick it before I pass the car on.
