CARiN CD's in BMW Nav

Has anyone tried to use CARiN maps for Pioneer, Phillips or CARiN maps for other vehicle manufacturers such as Opel/Vauxhall, Ford, Renault, Volkswagen or Rover in a BMW MKIV (HIGH) nav computer?

FYI, CARiN is a map format created by VDO-Dayton, and the map CD is identified by the following files:
  • carinet
  • carindb
  • abstract
  • copyrigh
  • bibliogra
Do these CD's work at all in a Professional nav?

Apart from the BMW-specific POI, does anything not work, or behave differently?

Why? I was wondering if the latest digital maps could be bought cheaper from someone other than BMW...

For sure CARin maps are working in BMW navigation systems (MKI..MKIV). The producer of these systems is Siemens VDO who is owner of the CARin format.
By the way, if someone has a way to create maps with this format, I am very interested.

Jacques.

They work in other VDO-Dayton based systems, syuch as VW Phaeton, VW, Range Rover (BMW-based RR), Rolls Royce, Mini, and I think the French put VDO in some of their cars...??

I don't believe the maps are locked to any one vehicle manufacturer, however the POI data may be specific to a particular vehicle maker - eg: vehicle service centres.

Yeah, that's my assumption too. I'm keen to hear from someone that's actually tried this though.

I used one of the VDO Dayton disks in a MK III, at the time (about 5 years ago) it was the only way of getting TMC to work in them. Other than TMC you would not know that it was not a BMW disk, the BMW dealerships were even available.

Is there some one who knows where I can get my hands on VDO OS disc? (MO5598) I would like to get the voice files from it.

I burned East Europe 2007.2 CARIN maps and it doesn't work with my NAV, I have an 2001 328 with MKII unit. The West Europe 2007.1 cd is working ok, but when i Insert the new one the message apears "no CD" and I can't eject the CD. After I restart it the CD can be ejected.
Any one knows why?

'carindb' - map database
'carinet' - TMC messages (may be absent)
'bibliography' - used at startup to check map release and BSW version compatibility, also used to detect a map change (by analyzing CD-ID string).
All other files are not used.

Map can be locked to a specific vehicle by adding 'carinsys' file to map CD.

This is very interesting...so we can theoretically get maps from other manufacturers and not have to wait for BMW to release them?? (they are very slow here in Australia)

This is exciting news...anyone know what other car manufacturers use the Carin file structure?
