MK4 behaves dead - black screen

Hi,

I hope you all can help me, this is my story:

My car was equiped with a MK3, I did al lot of updates om my MK3.

Sometimes the unit seems dead, but I always managed to bring it back alive. With older and newer firmware updates. So I do have expirience in trouble shooting ;-)

Now I bought a Mk4 DVD unit, It came with software V28 and worked fine.

I changed the language from french to dutch and used an V28 CD to load the voices. All went fine and the unit came up in dutch (spoken and tekst)

Nerd as I am , I decided to make an upgrade to V29.1, I used a CR-RW because I wanted to experiment with some splash screens also.

Of course, now I know, the MK4 does not like CD-RW. So the unit seems dead. Black screen.

I tried everything, back to older softwareversions (on CD-R), then to newer versions. Used Navcoder to do default coding. But still a black screen.

Stange is that it seems like the update process is going well, when I put the CD in, the red light goes out, comes up after a few seconds and finaly (like normal updates) the unit ejects the cd. But still no screen.

Who can help me to bring my MK4 back to live. When I install my MK3 again, it workes fine, so it must be the MK4 unit.

Please help.

Regards,
Max - Holland

Some key things to check:

When the screen is black on the Mk4, can you still communicate with it using NavCoder? Read the nav settings, read the nav languages... etc. If you can communicate, then the processor is running and the comms interface is working

Is the Mk4 coded for Mono or Colour? check the label on the top - does it say BMWM01S or BMWC01S? M=mono, C=colour

If Mono, then the video outputs are switched off and it needs to be recoded to colour

Hi,

lable says nothing like that, but as I wrote the unit has worked fine.

In color with V28.

I still can code the unit by your great software, so the unit seems to operate fine. Exept no display.

Even the procedure for updating seems to go fine, but still no screen.

What can it be?

Regards,
Max

Im almost sure it is a monochrome unit

There is a thread by Kiwijochen about this problem, i think there is a downloadlink for a modified os-disc that Jochen made and the necessary explaining how to use it!
I tried it myself and it works like a charm

Pm me if you have any problems

Regards

Joël

Ok, I hope so, but how can you explain that it worked fine in color, even after I changed the language to Dutch?

It went wrong after the V29.1 upgrade.

Because when you updated your language i asume you used the same disc as the v.28 os system, and then the unit only programs the language files but does not update anything else!
But when you insert and loaded the v29 os, the unit is completly updated like a format and reïnstalls the os!
The only problem is that the downloadlink contains a modified v28, and im not smart enough to make you a modified v29 that garanties its 100% gonna work, but when you wanna be sure to have a colorscreen programming, just use Kiwijochens v28!

Sorry for my bad english, i can explain you in dutch but i think we should have to pm and not post here in dutch

Regards

Joël

Smile Yep, I dit it....with your help

Hi,

your English is fine, it was my brain that has to reset

What you where saying is that my MK4 probably is a Monochrome version, and that when I bought it, someone else already made it work for color with a special V28 version.

In my mind I always where thinking that I had a color version.

But you where right, I made a special V28 version and it works!!!!

Many thanx to al, I used this threath to make the special V28 version.

Thanx!

I succeeded, V29.1 running in dutch with custom splashscreen en navi-clouds.

Me happy

Just follow the same procedure as with the V28 URL.

Extract navboot from the V_2 RR 0101 BMWC01S app_sw navboot

Do some editing if you like.

Then copy the file to
V_2 RR 0101 BMWM01S app_sw navboot

Then the burn to cd and follow the normal procedure.....

Works like a charm.

Hi all, I now know how to properly recode the Mk4 from BMWM01S (mono) to BMWC01S (color).

I successfully recoded a nav tonight, on my workbench next to my PC.

I will be adding this to NavCoder shortly.
