BMW X3 small mono screen TO big color screen - Retrofit
I have a BMW X3 2004 with a monochrome color screen and i want to add a 16/9 color screen. I have : I Want : I have read a lot of thread in this forum and i'm sur you will help me. I'll buy a CID monitor for X3 and the cable loop is not a problem, i'll do it. Here are my questions : 1/ I have a MK4, can i keep it ? If yes do i need to recode it or to hack the OS firmware to force it to work with the color screen ? Is a OS update to v29.1 will force it to detect the color screen ? 2/ Can i keep my actual radio and command modul (the one on the first picture with the small screen) ? I think yes but... 3/ If i need ibus connection, where can i plug my ibus interface (the one with navcoder) in the car ? Thanks guys !!! Thomas

You need:
1. New radio 2. New CID screen 3. Wiring loom or extra wires 4. Recode the nav from mono to colour J |

Thanks you KiwiJochen for your answer.
- CID : Ok i'll buy one on Ebay today or in a few days. - Wiring Loom : I'll add the extra wire from the MK4 to the CID with a 'home made cable'. This is not a problem. - Recode : Ok i'll do it with your navcoder, thanks for it ! - Radio : Why do I need a new radio ? My actual radio is connected to the MK4 to receive sound and to send commands from the buttons (all the button are the same as on the navi radio). Don't you think i can keep it ? Thanks again ! Thomas

Wiring loom: it's more that 1 wire, you need to run the 3 x RGB leads, (these are a shielded cable) plus the ibus, power and ground leads for the CID. Refer to the WDS to see the difference in looms.
Radio: you can try with your existing radio if you want. It's not a combination the manufacturer ever intended, and I don't know how well it will work.. |

1 - Yes, but you will need to follow Kiwijochen's instructions and use navcoder to convert to a full colour Mk4 2 - No, you need a new CID controller / Radio Tuner as in 2nd picture as well as the actual CID (65.50.3.424.691). Making it work has more to do with software compatibility between the components than with physcial similarities. I doubt your exiting radio would accept the software needed to control the CID. Note that the CID does not plug directly into the CID controller but instead into a socket on the nav harness. You could make the necessary RGB connections but finding the socket for the CID connection could be difficult (it's different to the blue/magenta plugs at the Mk4 end). A new retrofit wiring harness is the cleanest way to go. Part number 61.12.0.390.114. I'm assuming there's already a quadlock connector on the back of your business nav radio. You might want to have a look behind the radio and air con controls just in case BMW use a common harness for both prof and business nav systems. There's a slim possibility that the CID socket you need is already there unused waiting for the day you (or a dealer) upgrade to full nav. If not, swapping the harnesses could be difficult since I suspect your existing harness is wrapped in with all the other control lines. You also need a couple of speednuts and screws to attach the CID in place of the storage box. The CID requires extra mountings: 07.11.9.904.186 (x2), 51.45.7.032.762 (x2). See http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...65&fg=45&hl=12 3. Easiest place is the CD changer connections under the central console storage bin. Just pull the bin upward to get to the CDC connectors. I use reslers interface and an Intravee with these connectors with no problems. Get a copy of Nav retrofit instructions from a dealer 01.29.0.309.690 and a copy of TIS to help with trim removal steps. This is well worthwhile - the prof nav solution is far better. Tom, one other observation - your existing radio lacks one of the buttons on the CID controller - the one that toggles the display between the current menu item (computer, nav, dsp, tv, phone etc) and the radio screen - this is a useful, if not essential, button with the prof nav system.

Good notice David ! It's must be the button on the middle.
You say it is usefull but not essential. If i dont have this button, how can i whitch between "computer, nav, phone" and radio ? I have another question, but nobody have the answer, if it's working, what will be display on the radio screen ?? Nothing ? Only Radio info ? Radio and nav as today ?... We will see in a few weeks. I'll make a lot of picture during installation. Thomas

Hi, in a Z4 you only have Kbus - it works the same as Ibus - just connect NavCoder to the Kbus.
You cannot switch between computer/nav/phone and radio if you don't have the radio/nav button. But when you change things on the radio, it shows the radio screen briefly (for about 5s) automatically. J |

Ok KiwiJochen but I dont have a Z4 but a X3 (but ok i'll use the KBus with your Ibus interface).
Ok for the toggle button, today also when i'm in navigation it switch briefly to the radio if I change something. I can switch to the radio screen with 'Menu' then 'Radio' then 'validate' (like on the first picture). It is not possible with the big screen ? Sorry for all thoose questions but I have a lot of things in my head ! Thomas
