I think it is strange that it went that wrong with only uppdate ?
Could it be that your car had monocrome display from factory so you nead edited software in order to make it work with color screen.
I thnk i have seen this issue on the forum somwhere
i think it is worth a try

d4rkchoco:

I had the same EXACT symptom as you described. here is something you can try and see if it works. the MK4 has two lasers, one for DVD and one for CD. In my case, trying to load the OS with a CD had problems and my guess is that the CD laser was faulty. I never knew since I mostly put DVDs in the system. So, what i did was copy the CD content and made a data DVD disc w/ the navigation OS. I then inserted the DVD instead... and it started booting up and updated itself to v29.1.

I had the same exact symptoms... the power light was out, but i could hear the unit spinning the disc inside. I think the MK4 has enough firmware on it that as long as you give it good data on a disc it can read, i.e., the laser for the disc is working... it should be able to recover.

Try that before you give up.. and if it works out, send me a bottle of wine
