Is the GPS antenna connected and working?
Are you parked outside so you can receive the GPS signal?

The nav unit remembers its last location, until gets a fresh new GPS position fix.

Check the GPS antenna status in the service mode while parked outside with unobstructed view of the sky.

Make sure the rear parcel shelf is clear of anything and that you have no metallic window tint on the rear windscreen, and that the boot is closed. As the GPS antenna is on the rear parcel tray, you don't want to obstruct the signals.

There is a mini-coax connector on the back of the unit that the antenna plugs into.

That's why its not working: no GPS antenna connected.

If he upgraded from Mk2 to Mk3, then he needs to unplug the antenna wire from the old, external, GPS receiver, and connect it to the new Mk3 nav unit. The Mk3 has the GPS received built in.

The old (external) GPS receiver is no longer required, it can be unplugged and removed, and sold on eBay :-).
Even if you don't remove it, you should unplug it.

He has BMW Assist and/or telephone installed, and the nav has BMW Assist enabled.

You may not have telephone, may not have BMW, or may not have the option enabled in the nav unit.

In most countries you have to subscribe to the BMW Assist service.
