Hi Matrix,
Welcome to the forum. Quote:
The laser is probably out of alignment (or gone out of tolarance) and it will now not read copied DVD's, this is probably why it was on eBay in the first place, but it should read OEM discs OK though. Quote:
Do you have an OEM Map DVD to try?

Yes you right it was from ebay.
The previus owner is telling me he was only using oem DVD´s. No i havent a OEM DVD disc, only my home made version. Is this normal, the MK4 unit is form 10month 2004 ? Best regards Matrix |

Have a go with a DVD-R or DVD-RW, and see what happens. Quote:
If push comes to shove, bung it back on ebay and try and get a newer one.

Well, I use DVD-R (or DVD-RW) only and have used TDK, verbatim and bulkpaq (all with the purple rytec 05 dye) and in my drive, I've had no problems.
The DVD-RW is a verbatim. I always write at 1x or 2x, I know they will write at faster speeds but that may pickup write errors so I don't give it the chance. I know some people have used DVD+R and DVD+RW, but I have not tested any, So I can't give any sort of opinion. Good luck and all the best.

I have bought several MKIV nav computers for a number of upgrade projects, both brand new and from eBay. They all have problems reading copied DVDs. So, do not feel bad, like you may have purchased a defective unit. This is 100% normal for most people's experiences. I would go out on a limb and say that anyone who gets a MKIV to read a copied disk cleanly all of the time is probably more the exception than the norm.
Like ccfj1 says, if you burn a backup copy at a slow speed, and use very good media, you can make it better. But I'll bet you still see regular crashes. I had pretty good look with Verbatim media on mine.

I'd agree the Mk IV is very fussy with copied disks. I use Verbatim disks and in one PC the Nav will only read them if I burn at 16x and from another PC the Nav will only read them if I burn at 2x, figure that out!!!

Matrix: Here's some additional info on the subject: http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=68188
In my experience, there are some real differences in Media. Look closely at the boxes of media and you will see that most of it is made in Tiwan. If you can find media made in Japan your going to have a far better product. http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmed...vdr_media.html

Ok today i dissambled the drive almost 100% and i did find a screw that was ajusting the hight off the lens. I started to adjust app. ½-1turn the one way, tested with all off my diffrent burnd media and my working cd until the disk was headding somthin internal, and after that i did the same thing the other way. I couldent use the DVD´s at anytime. The CD was working almost all time.
Guess i will try to go on ebay again and by a orginal DVD for Europe and se. Best regards |
