replacing 2001 nav w/ lastest model?

have an old 4:3 screen CD nav - Any ideas on best way to bring it uptodate? - Where to get (or install)? - need to also install Bluetooth, which is why nav needs to upgrade.

bring it uptodate? in what way???

Well, a couple of suggestions,

Upgrade the nav computer to a mk4 (if you have the mk3).
Get the latest software for the nav unit will help, (v29).
Get the 16x9 monitor.

Bluetooth does not form part of the navigation system and must be installed separatly, (US cars and have the BT looms pre-installed on 2002) so if you want to retrofit BT you need a BT ULF, a mic, the BT antenna and the pair button (you can aslo get the eject box, but this is not needed to get the BT option to work), if you are unlucky enough to have a car with no BT pre-installed you will also need the retrofit BT loom.

This is for my 2001 X5 - I believe it to be a MkIII - It's a CD system vs a DVD, so I'm not sure if software is upgradable - Anywhere I can get a MkIV w/16:9 screen? - I thought I read somewhere that to add the Bluetooth, if you have nav, it must be a MkIV system for compatibility reasons - I know about the antenna (had it installed in my 2006 as it did not come with the factory supplied Bluetooth install) - the 2001 has a phone cradle, I guess for a CPT8000 setup (as that what was offered in 2001) - BMW dealers have told me they could not install a Bluetooth setup in my 2001 (12/00 build) - No other reason given, so I'm alittle perplexed, as I've heard of others upgrading.

I retrofitted my 2001 X5 with the 16:9 screen, MkIV, and Bluetooth. Works flawlessly. Articles on the home page.

Version V22, (3-1/63) I think is the last available for the mk3.

eBay would be the best place to start, you should be able to get the Mk4 for around the $500-$600 mark and the same again for the widescreen monitor.

First time i've heard that one... You can fit OEM BT to just about any bmw with or without satnav, (with any mk of nav computer).

It will run independantly of the navigation computer, all you "must" have is the radio (as this provides connection for the ULF's audio out to link to the cars audio system).

I know about the antenna (had it installed in my 2006 as it did not come with the factory supplied Bluetooth install)
Right. (Bluetooth Antenna, BMW p/n 84-50-6-928-461, approx $20)

If you have the fixed phone kit then upgrading to BT should be straight forward, have a look here for OEM BT retro-fits, http://www.xoutpost.com/bluetooth.php

Hmmm, sounds like BS to me, more like they have no idea how to do it so they fobbed you off with excusses.

It's definatly do-able, have a look at the link and there are quite a few who have done the upgrade.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info! This is definitely a DIY project for me when I get back to SC next month. Maybe it was the Sirius Sat radio setup that needs the MkIV.

The OEM Sirius Sat Radio needs an updated radio module from a 2003-2006 X5.

I knew something else had to get updated. Guess if I'm going to remove the nav, I might as well go the rest of the way.
