Question Extending Nav/DVD Drive Life

Am I shortening the life of my system or at least the DVD drive if I leave map display continuously showing on the screen?

Typically my default screen display mode is the nav map perspective mode while driving even though I am not navigating per se. I now wonder if I am causing my DVD drive to spin continuously when I do this (and thus shortening its lifetime)? If I just leave the display in the select feature mode, i.e., nav, entertainment, communications, and (whatever the other node is), does this mean the Nav dvd drive does not need to spin?

Not at all. The system is busy behind the scenes, even when you are not viewing the map.

To make sure I am understanding, does your response mean that the DVD drive is always spinning??? Thanks, Roger

Yes - the drive spins continuously. The only thing that changes is whether it sends a picture of a map to the screen or a picture of your CD Track.

I think what makes a bigger difference is the type of disc in use.

A pressed, original disc reflects more light to the laser than a copied disc

I think DVDs have some auto-power control circuitry on the lasers - if they do, then the laser power would be reduced for a pressed DVD over a copied DVD.

I'm not sure on this - so someone correct me if i am wrong!

The nav also has a monitor off setting, but I think it just shuts off the monitor while the nav continues to do its thang...
